Hola, Hivers ✨

A STROLL THROUGH "MARINA HEMINGWAY" (ESP/ENG)

Hello, Hivers ✨

Greetings 😘 to all members of the Worldmappin community. I’m stopping by to share my first post with you. I hope you enjoy it.

Mentioning Marina Hemingway anywhere in Cuba is synonymous with luxury, glamour, and fun. For many years, it has been one of the most important nautical and tourist centers in the country, where water sports such as spearfishing and sport fishing are practiced. Sailing, diving, and excursions on small yachts designed for this purpose are also popular.

Located on the northern coast of Havana, it consists of four channels with a depth of eight meters where yachts and other vessels are anchored. It was inaugurated in 1953 and named after the great American writer Ernest Hemingway, who was an enthusiast of the sea, sport fishing, and a devoted lover of Cuba. Every year, Marina Hemingway hosts several nautical events and competitions, including the Ernest Hemingway International Billfish Tournament and regatta tournaments. These events attract both national and international athletes.

It is said that Hemingway’s yacht, "Pilar", frequently sailed through the waters of the Marina during the years when the great writer lived in Havana, at his estate Finca Vigía. Many world-renowned personalities have stayed here, including Gabriel García Márquez, Jimmy Buffett, Robert Redford, Jack Nicholson, Mick Jagger, and others.

Personally, I have been working at the Marina for almost ten years, and it has been a beautiful gift from life to be there, to see the sea, and to breathe its air every day. It is a true blessing. The Marina is a tourist destination visited by those seeking to enjoy a peaceful environment, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. It has a Nautical Club with several members, who usually participate in the annual billfish tournament. The Marina also stands out for other attractions, such as its local cuisine and sea views. Additionally, it has two hotels and two villas: the Hotel Club Acuario, the Hotel El Viejo y el Mar, the Villa Pilar, and the Villa Paraíso. The latter is particularly notable because, being an island, access is via a small causeway.

This complex also features three specialized restaurants: "La Cova de Pizzanova", specializing in Italian cuisine; Papa's, specializing in Chinese cuisine; and Chan Chan, specializing in Creole cuisine. There are also bars, shops, nightclubs, and a yacht service club.

The Marina was a radiant place for many years, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the country's economic situation, tourism has significantly declined. Hopefully, the stars will align in favor of this unique site so that Marina Hemingway can regain its splendor in the not-too-distant future.

Despite everything, the Marina remains a reference point for sea and sailing enthusiasts, as well as a vital hub in Cuba’s nautical life.

This concludes this little stroll through this iconic national landmark. I hope you enjoyed it. See you in another post.
