Utthayan Road: Thailand’s Most Beautiful Boulevard
Stretching approximately 3.98 kilometers between Phutthamonthon Sai 3 Road in Bangkok and Phutthamonthon Sai 4 Road in Nakhon Pathom, Utthayan Road—widely known by its original project name, Aksa Road—is often celebrated as the most scenic roadway in Thailand.
Historical Significance
The avenue was originally conceptualized as an axis connecting Bangkok directly to Phutthamonthon, the major Buddhist park and sanctuary. Its construction began under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration during the reign of King Rama IX to commemorate the Golden Jubilee (the 50th anniversary of the King's accession to the throne) in 1996. The road was officially opened on February 27, 1999, and conferred the royal name "Thanon Utthayan" (Park Avenue).
Architectural and Landscape Highlights
Designed with an emphasis on grandeur and natural integration, the roadway boasts a total width of roughly 90 meters, featuring distinct central and service lanes divided by lush median strips, canals, and walking paths:
- Hongsa Street Lamps: The most defining visual feature is the installation of nearly a thousand cast-bronze streetlamps topped with the Hongsa (a majestic mythical swan from Thai folklore).
- Linear Waterways and Gardens: Running parallel along the length of the road are tranquil waterways, manicured lawns, and flowering tropical trees such as Cassia fistula (Ratchaphruek).
- Fountains and Roundabouts: Both ends and central intersections are punctuated with tiered fountains and classical pavilions that evoke royal garden aesthetics.
Modern Community Role
Today, Utthayan Road serves as far more than a thoroughfare. In the late afternoons and evenings, it transforms into an open-air leisure destination. Cyclists, runners, and families frequent the pedestrian corridors, while photographers are drawn to the boulevard at dusk when the golden swan lights illuminate against the sunset.
