Things have changed a lot, the pattern of children's upbringing used in the 90s is totally different from what's currently used in our society today. Back in the days, in the early 2000s and through my secondary school stage, I was never entitled to money from parents be it an allowance or a gift and the culture back then made us not see anything bad in it because we were under the same roof and eating from the same pot. The money I needed to get myself something or give myself a good treat was the money I worked for myself through clearing farmland or going to building sites to work as an assistant to masons.
During break time in school, it was so hard to patronise the canteen like other Children because some of them were being given money by their parents. It was hard to buy and eat like them because the money I worked for had been saved for something important.
Even now, my parents have never bought the idea of giving their children an allowance except for those who are in school (higher institutions) and this money is practically for food and basic things. It's never for mere personal spending.
I won't lie, I don't find the idea okay except for those in higher institutions and no longer living under the same roof.
Yeah, you can call me a traditional man, I feel like giving money to children who are under the same roof as me is spoiling them.
I know this refusal of parents not giving money to their children often pushes the children to seek money in illegal ways, such as the boys going into fraud and the ladies going after men. But if I feel there's a difference too because most times people go into all this out of greed and not because there's not enough food or clothes provided for them.
I can provide my Children with good clothing, phones and other necessary things, but for that weekly or monthly allowance? No, I won't be a part of that.
"Do you mean you'll still abide by this rule even when you are rich in the tone of Elon Musk?"
In case you wanna ask me this, the answer is YES, I'll still abide by this rule. Having children who have access to money makes them very lazy to work for their own money. They'll take advantage of the privilege and never think of working for their money.
Let me tell you, I bought the first phone I ever used by myself with the money I saved from the menial jobs I did. I had that when living under the same roof with my parents. I got to understand that money is difficult to make but it can also be made when we work for it.
