As children, we all dreamt of having everything settled at a very young age and never finding ourselves in the situation of most of our uncles and aunties, and even our parents, at that age. But life has a way of humbling everyone. As a matter of fact, no lady who is 30 years old currently and not married envisioned herself being in such a situation when she was very young. Everyone, in their head, mapped out the path to follow to arrive at their goals, even though we didn't know how tough the path would be. That is life for us.
In the afternoon of 31st August, a colleague visited me at my workplace. We were talking and, along the line, he paused and said, "So tomorrow is September. Omo, this year has finished again." Both of us mockingly laughed at how time is flying without looking back, without considering that a lot of us have set goals that we are yet to achieve. I remembered how he once marked this year as the year he would settle down before the year ends, but with the look of things, the year is running so fast and the probability of achieving that goal is very low.
The funniest thing is that this is exactly how life is for many people. For sure, everyone, at one point or the other in our young age, dreamed of seeing everything mapped out in the future, but along the line, the dream got paused. Meanwhile, time keeps moving because it waits for no one, and one keeps striving to meet up.
I think one of the guiding forces behind this achievement is parental support. In most cases, children who are born with silver spoons have their lives mapped out at a very early age, and they walk confidently on the path set for them due to their parents' efforts, especially when there is good financial support. These ones don't appear as if they don't know what they are doing or are waiting to be controlled by whatever life throws at them. They are totally ready, with the help of their parents, to shift obstacles along the way to a corner and continue their journey.
Is life fair to everyone on this note?
Two weeks ago, at the time of writing this, I travelled home for a burial ceremony, and I saw someone who made me think twice about life again. I saw one of our senior prefects from secondary school. He wasn't looking nice at all. He was doing a very menial job at the event, which did not befit him at all, taking it from the perspective of how a lot of us were looking up to him when he was our most adored Senior Prefect, with brilliance covering all over him. I don't know how he came about submitting so low to life, but I'm sure he had dreams when he was a child and even when he was with us as a Senior Prefect in secondary school. But life happened to him...
