If we put the CIA/Gateway material aside and look at the neuroscience, there are some striking overlaps between dreaming, meditation, psychedelics, and experiences reported around death—but they aren't proof that these states are the same phenomenon.
The common thread: altered self-awareness
In ordinary waking consciousness, the brain maintains a relatively stable model of:
- “I am a particular person.”
- “I am located here.”
- “This is my body.”
- “This is the external world.”
- “Time is moving in this direction.”
Several unusual states appear to weaken or reorganize parts of that model.

Psychedelics are particularly revealing
Studies of psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin show changes in large-scale brain-network organization, including reduced integrity of the default mode network, a system associated with self-referential processing.
That provides an interesting possible explanation for experiences such as:
“I lost my sense of self.”
Rather than consciousness simply being turned off, the brain's normal organization of the self may be temporarily reconfigured.
That's one reason psychedelic experiences can resemble certain descriptions of advanced meditation.
Dreams do something similar—but differently
During REM sleep, the brain can generate extraordinarily convincing worlds internally.
You can:
- see people who aren't physically present
- hear voices
- experience impossible environments
- lose awareness that you're dreaming
- experience distorted time
- accept bizarre events as completely normal
And yet the experience can feel completely real while it's happening.
Lucid dreaming is especially interesting because someone can become aware:
“I'm dreaming.”
That gives researchers a rare opportunity to study an altered state while the person is still able to communicate with researchers.
Meditation
Some experienced meditators report something even more unusual: the weakening or disappearance of the ordinary sense of “me.”
This is sometimes called ego dissolution, although meditation traditions describe it in many different ways.
Neuroscience is beginning to investigate this using brain imaging and electrophysiology, but we don't have a single agreed-upon neural explanation.
And then there's death
This is where we have to be especially careful.
During cardiac arrest, the brain loses its normal blood and oxygen supply. If circulation isn't restored, brain function eventually becomes irreversibly lost.
However, the transition isn't necessarily an instantaneous switch from consciousness → nothing.
There can be a period during which brain activity is severely disrupted, and research into cardiac arrest and near-death experiences is trying to understand what subjective experiences can occur during that period.
Some cardiac-arrest survivors report remarkably structured experiences—bright light, peace, encounters with people, panoramic memories, leaving the body, etc.
But there's a major unresolved problem:
We generally don't know exactly when during the arrest the reported experience occurred.
That makes it extremely difficult to conclude that the experience happened while the brain was completely nonfunctional.
Here's the really interesting convergence
Across these states, researchers repeatedly encounter changes involving:
self → body → perception → memory → time → sensory integration
And this suggests a potentially powerful hypothesis:
Conscious experience may depend less on a single “consciousness center” and more on how the brain continuously constructs an integrated model of self and world.
That's very different from saying consciousness is only the brain, because neuroscience hasn't solved the fundamental philosophical problem of why physical processes produce subjective experience in the first place.
And this brings us back to Gateway
The Gateway report was essentially asking a version of this question decades ago:
Could changing the brain's normal organization allow forms of experience that ordinary waking consciousness normally filters out?
That's a legitimate scientific question.
The leap occurs when someone goes from:
“Altered brain states produce extraordinary experiences.”
to:
“Therefore consciousness leaves the brain and accesses another dimension.”
The first is strongly supported by evidence. The second remains an extraordinary hypothesis without comparable evidence.
And that distinction is probably the most important thing to keep in mind when reading the CIA/Gateway material.
