It's fig season at the Desteni farm! This was my first time eating a fresh fig, and I got to taste it right off the tree!
Fidelis was teaching Adam and I how to pick the figs, and I noticed that most of the ripe ones had already been partially eaten by the birds and the bugs.
In the past, my reaction would have been one of viewing this as the work of pests, but not here. Here I am learning about providing for and sharing with all the critters that we share this space with.
So now, when I saw the half-eaten fruit, I was glad that so many species were enjoying the nourishment they offer. Especially due to the fact that humans sharing with such creatures is rare, causing their lives to become a difficult struggle in a world that offers enough for all.
It is in this way that they become labelled as 'pests'. WE created 'pests', cause if it weren't for our habits, 'pests' would not exist.
Rather, we should develop a culture of sharing, caring and consideration for our natural world. If we did so, it would actually benefit all involved, and there will be no such thing as 'pests'.
