I had a bit of an odd request on friday - i was asked to make a crochet bible cover for an Indian priestess! Dont ask me how this transaction occurred in sleepy little lochgilphead of all places! Seemingly the lady who kindly sells my crochet items in her shop knows this family, and they were chatting about their religious beliefs. They liked a baby blanket i had made in a sort of wave pattern, and asked if i could crochet 2 for them for an upcoming ceremony. They chose an aran weight yarn in this beige colour for their covers.
I dont know much about why a cover is needed for the bible, but from what i can gather, there is a wedding ceremony, and when the couple are joined a new bible is handed to them in a cover. This cover is woven with various pieces of sentimental value throughout their lives - almost like a patchwork blanket. The bible cover can also be used as a prayer mat.
I thought it was a really sweet idea, and the blanket takes no times at all - i finished this one in a day. With the border it is approx 20inches by 20inches.
Ive also been asked to make a virus pattern shawl in black and white, which ive made a start on. I wasnt sure how it would turn out in such bold colours, but it actually looks really fancy :) ill post a pic up of this once its a bit further along.
