This is one I thought of writing for a while just to give a bit of a backstory to a character I had written a while back, hope you enjoy it.
The batch of Stinter is nearly done, Gun-Kin Deset could smell the intoxicating aroma that was almost powerful enough to sting his nose. "Oh yeah. That's it. Rat-Trap, make sure you keep an eye on this, we don't want a repeat of what happened last time now do we?" Gun-Kin looked over at Rat-Trap, who was in a world of his own.
The grimy den they had turned into their cookhouse was dilapidated beyond repair. That was okay though, the place was the smallest building in their complex and wasn't being lived in after all. "I'm off into town. I won't be too long, just have to pick up something." Gun-Kin said to Rat-Trap, but, he felt as if he was speaking to himself. These new guys were a bit weird, they either had no charisma or no confidence in themselves. But, I suppose that's what happens when you only attract Chem-addled-maniacs.
Gun-Kin stepped outside of the shed into a sunny afternoon, he hadn't noticed how long he was inside and he only realised how stuffy the shed was, after taking his first fresh breath of air all day. He almost gasped because of it, but after a few deep inhales he was fine. I might ask the boss for some kind of mask to wear in future. A few people sat around one of the speeders, they didn't put any effort into talking to him as he hopped into the speeder. He took off and went through the large gates as he was reaching the speeder's top speed. Their base used to be an old military base, but, since it had been abandoned during the war it was left to the deserts of Zun-Kulla.
He made it into town quickly, even though it was fairly far from the base. His new armour must surely have arrived by now he thought while leaving the speeder. The town was stirring with people, considering that it was early that didn't seem weird. What was weird though, was the fact that he noticed he was receiving a lot more attention than he usually did. Stares and glares seemed to come from each person he passed. Wonder what that's about, he thought to himself. But, carried on, believing it to just be some of his paranoia, I should start laying off the Stinter.
Baska's Weapons and Armour. One of the only shops he cared about in this town. Baska was a good friend of his as well, he should be anyway, with the amount of business Gun-Kin had given him. "Baska. You got my armour?" Gun-Kin shouted into the empty shop, as he made his way up to the counter to lean on. "Gun-Kin. What are you doing here?" "Here for my armour of course. You think I'd forget about it?" Baska gave Gun-Kin a concerned look. "I figured you would be lying low, you not see the wanted posters?"
Wanted posters? What did he mean? Gun-Kin tried to recall what he'd done to warrant one of those. Hazy chem dreams were all he was met with, stupid Stinter, he thought. "No. I didn't" "What did you do Gun-Kin? It's a big reward, compared to the usual posters that go out." Gun-Kin couldn't help but feel proud, whatever it was must have been good. "Here, take your stuff and get out. I don't want any trouble around here, I'm sure you understand. Head back to your base and lay low for a while, I'm sure no one will come after you out there with the rest of the lads at your side." Gun-Kin nodded and waited for a moment as Baska went to retrieve his parcel. Once he received it he was off, back out into town. He eyed everyone he saw suspiciously. Any one of them could either tackle me or shoot me down.
But, no. None of them did, he was back in his speeder and back at the base within minutes. Or, at least what felt like minutes, time had been very strange the last few days.
He parked up the speeder and headed back to the shed, Rat-Trap and a few of the other lads were all talking, but, as Gun-Kin entered they went quiet. "What's going on everyone?" He asked upon entering but, no one responded, or even looked at him. "Got my new armour. How's the Stinter doing?" He tried to sound normal, but, wasn't sure if that came across.
"Good." Rat-Trap said. Then the door swung open. The boss walked into the shed, slowly. Gun-Kin was relieved. "How's the Stinter?" The boss asked. "It's ready." Gun-Kin said. The boss nodded at him and then looked to the others in the room, glancing back to Gun-Kin soon after. "Better get it ready to transport." Rat-Trap and one of the others stood up and walked over to the brewing station. Gun-Kin knew something was wrong. "Look. I just want to say one thing-" His words were cut off before he could finish, with a whack to the back of the head, Gun-Kin fell to the ground. "Boss?" He walked up to Gun-Kin, looking down at him all the while. "It's not personal Gun-Kin. You're worth just a bit too much, also I don't want any bounty hunters sniffing around here."
With that, the boss aimed up a kick to Gun-Kins face. It only took a few seconds until Gun-Kin passed out from the sharp pain coming from his jaw.
