Approval is NEVER about YOU

It's always about me

It's NOT that you are wrong
Or that I am right

It has nothing to do with
Anyone's worth or value

It has everything to do with
Filling a hole in our hearts

Somewhere I felt a little piece
Torn away, taken from me

Making me feel never complete
On my own, being myself

So I walked around looking
For that piece that would fill the void

I searched for it in the words spoken to me
I searched for it in the pats and praises from friends and family
I searched for it in the clothes I wore
In the shoes I walked
I tried to fill the four walls of my home with it
I tried to find people who would cover it up with their special love
I held onto things that hid it from my sight ... Till one day

I found it under the rubble of all that stuff
It was waiting patiently with a smile
So I sat with that hole and listened, watched and waited
It looked at me then nodded at my palm
Low and behold, there was THE piece that fit perfectly ...

A jagged slice of acceptance held in my hand for so long
As I lifted it up I saw, how crumpled it was from the years off gripping so tightly
Trying to pawn it off for the stuff I bought to fill the void

But nothing wanted to barter with MY acceptance
So it became the weight I carried
The burden on my shoulders
Till I found the perfect spot to lay it down
The place where it belonged ...

Right here in my heart
Whole again in my embrace
