I've been giving it some thought a while back how dependent of everything we have become. Don't get me wrong, I am a person enjoying that life is easy. But I am also a bit triggered by the fact that we have no idea how stuff happened anymore, and that the supermarket decides what we do and how we do it and also what we pay for it
At that same time I was out with a friend and she was telling about her homekitchen how she is starting it. Naturally I was intrigued by this story, espcially since I have zero gardering skills.
But apparently...that doesn't matter with modern technology ...Hooray!
So what my friend was telling me is there is this home eco system of homegrowing which takes away all of the con's on what you don't know about growing thing. Makkelijkemoestuin.nl is the name and I made the link to the English version for you all, because this stuff is free and full of info to use for everyone...love it!
Now at first...Yes, it is free....so how do they make their money? Well the also sell their products for people who have no idea where to start and those gardening supplies are expensive, like really expensive. But using the app is free and that is what we are doing.
We used old building material to make a rack for the soil ourselves and already that feels really good. No buying expensive stuff there. But we did order the seeds, because they go along with the app
I really loved the idea of growing pods (like thick stringbeans) because the grow up high and give a lot of beans which you can use almost in every dish.
But honestly as I am...I literally I had no idea that they came from old peas (okay deep down I knew this, but I didn't realize it). What you do is you put these old peas/seeds on some wet toilet papier and let them soak in for like a couple of days.
When they develop a little root you stick them into the ground, and they start to grow fast.
I mean like really fast. I mean like 2 centimeter per day kind fo fast. It was that fast that I even was wondering if my starting container was deep enough because they go so damn fast.
This was like a week later and these guys were starting to get huge! But the reality is, this is extremely satisfying for someone with zero skill, knowing that you didn't kill them.
It is still spring in Holland which means the weather is kind of tricky when you talk about growing stuff outside. Nights can still be damn cold with even frosty temperature, but the sun is already bright but it is also still pumping rain like a madman.
That means I wasn't to certain on that everything would survive outside, especially since it is also still windy and these long pods are still fragile thin as you can see
But with a bit of daily love and water and taking away the weeds that also want to grow in there, this stuff is actually working and growing! The pods need a rack to grow on, because they go high and they have little tentacles grasping to get themselves up.
Two weeks later this is the current situation. I'm proud actually!
According to my app I should have peas to eat at the end of May as you can see down here, and by July the plant is finished and it is time for something else.
Ofcourse these pods are not the only thing I have planted so I am expecting a nice summer of home food coming up. And for winter time? Well, the app gives me some options on stuff that is winterproof of outside temperatures, so I will be seeing that in a couple of months.
But for now, the score is looking good and I expect my pods to up up and away! Yes, I am experimenting with some affiliate marketing so when you buy something on Amazon for instance some gardening tools with these links, I might get something out of it.
