I have written before about happy little accidents happening in the garden. With this, I mean that all of a sudden seedlings are popping up on places where you didn't really intend them to. Most often, they are developing from seed from last year that was living rent free in the soil somewhere. This year for instance I found tons of marigold seedlings in the spot where I had grown them last year. No planting again this year, because they were just there.
Last year I had some tomato plants popping up at a place where I remember putting them last year, where I can image that I had missed a tomato falling and the seed somewhere ended up in the ground as you can see in this post. This was easy to determine what it was since the tomato plant really has a distinct smell.
And I can image for instance that this year also my tomato harvest will also let a fruit drop down here and there that I had missed because the harvest is so big as you can see in this post.
Now I am very much aware that you should rotate your crops to prevent disease from monoculture. But the reality here is that this a miniature allotment and that the roots are everywhere, so I am not worrying about this that much, as I try to put other stuff in here as well when I actually plant it.
So I have been working the worm compost tower situation and that is also a location where seed survives and that also gives some seedlings in the fresh soil.
What I do is when there is compost that I am not using, I collect it in containers with soil and sand where I let the ecosystem come back to life before I take out some soil for in the containers.
I guess there my digging wasn't very proper from my potato harvest from last year. Thinking back, I just dug through the container and didn't turn it entirely upside town so there must have been one left inside there that had started to sprout again. Because...I didn't actually plant anything in this container.....
So in the beginning of June I walked past one the containers and I saw that something seriously was growing in there. I recognized the plants from another container where I actually had planted them, and of course I decided to just leave it there to grow.
Since I had no idea when it actually had started growing I asked chatGPT every now and then if the plant was already ready for harvest. But this summer was challenging heat wise and now in the last summer some serious rain had started coming down over the last couple of days.
From what I know from my potato adventures is that too wet soil will make the potatoes rot, so I went against my AI advice and decided to harvest it all.
This time I actually went through the whole container, and I was very surprised to still find some more potatoes deeper down than I had expected.
For real, digging up potatoes is extremely fun to do if you ask me. Especially since I didn't plant anything.
I just want to post this random extra thing. Not because it is a happy little accident as well, but because I am just really proud of that this was actually working.
Yeah eggplant, one of the least winning veggies here in this climate. But for sure one that I thriving and I expect to have enough growing time for a decent harvest later on.
Eggplant for sure I will try again next year as this is super fun to grow, I just need to start a bit earlier with these one since I think it need some more months for the fruits to grow. But the plants as still producing a lot of flowers, so it looks like it wants to expand. Next time
