First day of the year and of the decade. Nope!! Nothing spectacular to garner a multitude of fans in the social arena.. hahaha. No dare devil stunts or parties. Not even releasing goals or bucket lists (though I do have those tucked in my head).
However, I spent time being present with the family. We had a nice lunch. We spent quality time, laughing, talking... and discussing of all things OJ Simpson as we watched The People vs O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
We also talked about the last couple of weeks that had passed. We had some fantastic memories with Dad's birthday but we also had some concerns with my brother's kids falling sick back to back, over and over again. So there were many hospital trips in between the good times. It was confirmed today with the 3rd blood test that the 18 month old had Influenza A & B. Poor baby.
The last couple of weeks, I have also received news of many deaths. Of friend's parents, in-laws and people we know and know of. Some had lived a full life and as sad as it was, the saddest has to be one, who in his early 40's, healthy with no ailments that we know of, breaking into a sweat, complaining of chest pains, passing out and then on. I didn't really know him personally, but reading/hearing his story from friends was a shocker.
Also, this time, 3 years ago, we were gathering family to bid farewell to Mum. Standing by her bedside, holding her hand, whispering into her ear, apologizing for the hurt, thanking her for all her love and support. The religious amongst us praying over her, tears and sadness all around.
I guess this day will forever now be that day of new beginnings but also a day I bid farewell to the most special person in my life. Someone who had in so many ways, showed me what unconditional love is all about.
This post comes with no pictures. Just a knowing, that we have this one life. And every day, every hour, every minute, we inch closer to that moment when it is all done. How precious life is, and how to make it count.
Rounding it off with a quote from the book Big Breasts and Wide Hips by Mo Yan.
“Where there's life, death is inevitable. Dying's easy; it's living that's hard. The harder it gets, the stronger the will to live. And the greater the fear of death, the greater the struggle to keep on living.”
