I found this little butterfly on one of my house plants. I used to know the names of most butterflies in the UK, but this one I wasn't sure about so I had to look it up. Apparently it's quite a common butterfly in the UK, and is called a Ringlet. It's Latin name, for those interested, is Aphantopus hyperantus. It's quite a small butterfly and not particularly colourful being plain brown except for a pattern of tiny cream coloured ring, with black centres on its wings. It would be quite difficult to see on a tree trunk or branch.
Fortunately I managed to catch him and release him safely outside, away from the spiders that lurk in the conservatory roof. Hopefully he didn't become a meal for a passing bird. It can't be a lot of fun being a creature that's on the menu of various other animals.
