Hello everyone in the wonderful homesteading community. I hope you are all doing well.
Here in Nigeria, it is the rainy season. Do you know what that means? Weeds grow faster alongside the crops, and in order to obtain the best results, we have to remove the weeds as soon as possible. Sadly, I’m not pleased with the situation in my garden. My parents and I traveled to my aunt’s place and there was no one to take care of the garden, so they were neglected for about three weeks.
I came back this morning and the first thing I did was to change my clothes to something light and go check out the garden. The first thing I checked was my aloe vera. They are so special to me, because I planted them myself. I learned aloe vera helps heal wounds and moisturize the skin. It also helps treat some ailments like allergic reactions. A friend of mine told me aloe vera helps smoothen the face, how true is that? Considering the strong smell.
Some weeds were already growing alongside the aloe vera, so I had to uproot the weeds carefully.
The next thing I checked was my cassava. In all truth and sincerity, I was very happy to see them. Although they were surrounded by weeds, they looked very good. About 2 months ago, my mom and I planted cassavas. It was stressful, but I know soon enough, we’d be reaping what we sowed. Cassava farming is one of the most prominent crop farming in Nigeria. An interesting fact about cassava is that; the peels are not useless; they can be used to feed our animals.
I have heard a lot of interesting things about bitter leaves. Did you know bitter leaves help regulate the blood cholesterol level? A friend of mine told me this, and I was like, “Wow, I have to plant it in my garden”. He also said bitter leaf helps prevent diseases like diabetes; a hereditary disease in my family.
This morning, I decided to take a bold step and plant it in my little garden. I don’t know much about bitter leaves. But I was told all I had to do was to plant the stem, which I did.
If you’re one of those that think bitter leaf is not important, I’d advise you to do more research about it. The plant or herb might be better, but it is loaded with lots of nutrients like proteins, zinc, magnesium, copper, calcium, and so on.
