Hello @humbledwriter. Being independent is a good personality trait to have. You want to be self-reliant and have goals and aspirations of your own. I commend you for desiring to become successful and provide for your parents. They provided for you.

Your girlfriend seems like a lovely young lady. Take care of each other and rely on each other for support and encouragement. That does not mean you are losing your independence. That means you are learning to be responsible adults with a caring nature towards someone you care about that may become a permanent part of your life of sharing and caring.
