25 December 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2962 | Prompt: now, not then (ahora, no entonces)
MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "now, not then".
...When considering the word prompt, I think of consequences. The results of an action or non-action that individuals consider as an after thought in hindsight. One can only act or react on knowledge at hand, not being able to often foresee the consequences of those actions.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 25 December 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2962: now, not then; and
20 December 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2957: appeal to them
.
Below is my story:
"It's called the "Ides of March" for a reason. A dire warning," Arthur reminded his brother as they stood at the front gates of the castle.
"Why now, not then," Christian retorted, annoyed by his brother's timidity. His chance to dissuade him on volunteering had passed.
I've witnessed men butchered to the point unrecognizable. Tied to trees and burned alive. Your insatiable appetite for battle since a lad will bring you closer to that fate sooner than you realize. Those glorified actor performances only encourage your fantasies and macabre obsession."
"Those plays depict real life behind the scenes," Christian spat.
As if indeed a warning, chilling winds rushed forward as skies turned to smoke. In the distance, thunderous rumblings from within the dense forest shook tree branches. They swayed, then parted as the foreign army lined the snow-covered castle grounds. Their red, dragon-crested flag waiving premature victory.
The siege had begun.
The brothers were the first line of defense. Their eyes widened, nostrils flared, and jaws tensed. The air was thick with the smell of death. Dread enveloped them, realizing that their king failed in negotiations.
Neither spoke as Christian's rock-hard stomach quelched his rising fear. I mustn't allow my brother's satisfaction. He shot a quick glance at Arthur, lowered his bascinet, assumed battle stance with his polearm, then waited for his first battle.
"I pray my family forgives the steep cost of my decision," Arthur lamented silently.
"A knighthood awaits if I survive," Christian calculated, smiling.

A continuación mi historia.
He visto a hombres masacrados hasta quedar irreconocibles. Atados a árboles y quemados vivos.
