It was a lazy Saturday afternoon. Lying on her living room couch, suddenly Amelia hit a snag. Grimacing, she glanced up at the stark white popcorn ceiling before flinging the crossword puzzle across the room. Midair, the solution popped into her head. Brilliant, she smiled, rose slowly, then lumbered toward the hallway.
As she knelt to retrieve the book, the telephone rang.
"Mr. Silas here. Are you the adult of the house?"
"No," Amelia simply stated.
"Are your parents home?" This round was going to be touch Mr. Silas could already tell. It worsened quickly.
"I'm not supposed to tell strangers that in case you're a stalker or murderer. In which case, you'll know I'm alone and vulnerable." Knocked him off his pitch, she smirked, listening intently for an alternate comeback?
"I applaud your parents, young lady, they taught you well." Mr. Silas paused; heavy breathing followed.
"Why are you breathing like that through the phone? It speaks ill of your character, Mr. Silas," Emilia explained, suppressing a laugh.
"Apologies, young lady. I'm a salesman. A bit rattled by your forthrightness, I must say, but I have services to offer you."
"How do you know that I can afford your services, Mr. Silas. After all, I'm not an adult as already mentioned. And, I believe you desired to speak with my parents. Caution tells me that you're a despicable person and not to be trusted." Amelia waited for his next move.
For several long seconds, silence ran the length of the phone line to wherever Mr. Silas was calling from. By now, Amelia had already determined that he possessed an ulterior motive not remotely positive.
"Let me explain, young lady."
Amelia listened to Mr. Silas explain the services offered.
Satisfied they'd reached an amicable transaction, each hung up. Amelia resumed her crossword queries while eating a snack.
Two hours later, her parents returned, laughing as if they'd indeed enjoyed some alone time from their fifteen-year old teen.
"Parents, while you were out, I lay, she pointed, minding my own relaxed business when a strange man called. Peculiar he was. Claims that I can pick one person in the entire world to die. My choices included: an abusive parent; an evil dictator; some loyal terrorist; or a school bully. I can pick whoever I wish, and Mr. Silas will supposedly take care of it. No questions asked."
"What the hell! Amelia's dad retorted, in an alarmingly loud tone.
"How odd. Is he a con artist running a scam?" her mother frowned.
"Must certainly be or a lewd joke to lure you away from home," her dad warned.
"Let's call the authorities," they both agreed shaking their worried heads.
"No. I'm curious to know why and learn just how Mr. Silas plans to accomplish this task. You know I can handle myself. I've already agreed to meet him tonight at twilight. The crosswalk between Herring and Changeling. So let's have an early supper. I've only twelve hours to decide. But I want to get this over and done with." Amelia smiled enthusiastically.
Her parents exchanged suspicious glances, wished their daughter well, then prayed earnestly for Mr. Silas.

Amelia esperó a ver qué hacía él a continuación.
«No.
