Why the big cheeks? Why so many lips? are they lips?
I was inspired by a conversation with an artist in Tehran to go out and buy charcoal. I haven't drawn with charcoal since I was in high school! Back then I was into realism, mostly drawing people and animals with as much detail as i could.
For this venture, I wanted to try something different. I've been interested in the occultist and artist Austin Osman Spare and wanted to try making art in a similar fashion with automatic drawing.
I have, within the last few months, also started practicing energy work again. In my 20's, I took Chi Gung lessons with an instructor but fell out of practice over the years.
So, for this experiment I'm combining both energy work and automatic drawing.
I start with building energy and then draw with eyes closed. I just let the charcoal go where it wants. With eyes open I shape and form the auto draw into whatever I see. This one turned into big cheeked surreal face of sorts...
