Greetings, friends of #Hive and the Discovery-it community. Since the beginning of the year I've wanted to talk about the days at the library were like during 2022, but I've been putting it off until without realizing it, February arrived and I thought: it's now or never.
After the maintenance we performed on the library, after two years closed due to the pandemic, we opened the doors to the public and resumed library services relatively normally. This meant a lot of work for all the staff and new experiences for me that in a way have changed my life (here you can see the previous post where I talk about maintenance).
Saludos, amigos de #Hive y de la comunidad Discovery-it. Desde que empezó el año he querido hablar sobre cómo fueron los días en la biblioteca durante el 2022, pero he ido postergando la publicación hasta que sin darme cuenta llegó el mes de febrero y pensé: es ahora o nunca.
Luego del mantenimiento que realizamos a la biblioteca, tras dos años cerradas por la pandemia, abrimos las puertas al público y reanudamos los servicios bibliotecarios con relativa normalidad. Esto significó un montón de trabajo para todo el personal y nuevas experiencias para mí que de cierto modo han cambiado mi vida (aquí pueden ver la publicación anterior en la que hablo sobre el mantenimiento).
One of the services consists of promoting reading, with the intention of encouraging young people to read. For this work, Mary Flores, coordinator of the library, has been in charge of conducting workshops in several schools in the municipality of Naguanagua, some of them together with myself, and guided tours to the house of culture, where the library is located.
We started by showing the spaces of the house and several works of art that are exhibited there, and continued with the general room and the children's room of the library, without ceasing to inform about the activities that are carried out or the services that we offer as a house of study, among these, the circulating loan, better known as the library card, which allows you to check out books so you can read them in the comfort of your home.
Uno de los servicios consiste en promocionar la lectura, con la intención de incentivar a los jóvenes a leer. Para este trabajo, la Lic. Mary Flores, coordinadora de la biblioteca, se ha encargado de realizar talleres en varias escuelas del municipio Naguanagua, algunos de ellos junto conmigo, y visitas guiadas a la casa de la cultura, donde se encuentra la biblioteca.
Empezamos por mostrar los espacios de la casa y varias obras de arte que ahí se exhiben, y continuamos con la sala general y la sala infantil de la biblioteca, sin dejar de informar sobre las actividades que se llevan a cabo o los servicios que ofrecemos como casa de estudio, entre estos, el préstamo circulante, mejor conocido como el carnet de la biblioteca, que te permite sacar libros para que puedas leerlos en la comodidad de tu hogar.
At the end of the tour, we invite the children to take a seat at the tables in the children's room, on which there are several copies of a book chosen by us, for example, a Christmas story. The coordinator reads it with great enthusiasm (I am out of practice), while the students listen and at the same time look through the pages of the book. The type of books we usually present are children's stories that highlight the importance of values.
Al final del recorrido, invitamos a los niños a tomar asiento en las mesas de la sala infantil, sobre las que hay varios ejemplares de un libro elegido por nosotros, por ejemplo, un cuento de Navidad. La coordinadora lo lee con gran entusiasmo (a mí me falta práctica), mientras los alumnos escuchan y al mismo tiempo hojean las páginas del libro. El tipo de libros que solemos presentar son cuentos infantiles que destacan la importancia de los valores.
In addition to promoting reading, we have also carried out plastic arts activities and other simple and fun activities in the schools, ideal for the youngest children and in line with the month's anniversaries.
In December, for example, we went to the Dr. Lisandro Lecuna school and celebrated food day with children from five to six years old. We played a memory game, in which the decks of cards were huge cards made of cardboard, with drawings of various fruits such as pears, bananas, watermelons, strawberries, camburias, etc. After a lively presentation by both us and the students, we placed the decks face down on the floor and asked the children, one at a time, to pick them up and guess where the similar card was.
When someone discovered or remembered where the other card was, we applauded enthusiastically, and when they failed to try, we applauded too. There were children who were embarrassed and others who were really having fun, to the point of stealing the show with their witticisms. And if one of them discovered, for example, the two cards where the camburs appeared, we would ask the rest of the students what the fruit was called and they would excitedly shout out the name, so you can imagine how excited they were.
Además de promover la lectura, también hemos realizado actividades de artes plásticas y otras dinámicas sencillas y divertidas en las escuelas, ideales para los más pequeños y acordes a las efemérides del mes.
En diciembre, por ejemplo, fuimos al colegio Dr. Lisandro Lecuna y celebramos el día de la alimentación junto a niños de cinco a seis años. Realizamos un juego de memoria, en el que las barajas eran enormes cartas hechas con cartulina, que tenían dibujadas varias frutas como peras, plátanos, sandías, fresas, cambures, etc. Luego de una animada presentación, tanto por parte de nosotros como de los estudiantes, colocamos las barajas boca abajo en el suelo y pedimos a los niños que pasaran, de uno en uno, a levantarlas y adivinar dónde estaba la carta similar.
Cuando alguno descubría o recordaba dónde estaba la otra carta, aplaudíamos con entusiasmo, y cuando fallaban al intentarlo, también. Habían niños que tenían pena y otros que realmente se estaban divirtiendo, hasta el punto de robarse el show con sus ocurrencias. Y si alguno descubría, por ejemplo, las dos cartas donde aparecían los cambures, preguntábamos al resto de estudiantes cómo se llamaba la fruta y gritaban emocionados el nombre, así que podrán imaginarse lo animados que estaban.
The library also lends its space to people who give particular workshops, in exchange for a small contribution to cover expenses such as light bulbs and cleaning products, and hoping at the same time for a greater flow of users.
Since November of last year, we have been supporting Maryangel Diaz, who teaches a chess workshop to children in the children's room on Wednesdays and Fridays from one to four in the afternoon. Maryangel is a patient person, with great ability to deal with children and with a lot of chess knowledge. Thanks to her and the children who attend the place with their parents, the children's room has been gaining more users and awakening the curiosity of those who attend other workshops in the house of culture.
La biblioteca también se encarga de prestar sus espacios a personas que imparten talleres particulares, a cambio una pequeña colaboración para cubrir gastos como bombillos y productos de limpieza, y esperando al mismo tiempo una mayor afluencia de usuarios.
Desde noviembre del año pasado, prestamos apoyo a Maryangel Diaz, quien imparte un taller de ajedrez a niños en la sala infantil, los miércoles y viernes de una a cuatro de la tarde. Maryangel es una persona paciente, con gran habilidad para tratar a los niños y con muchos conocimientos de ajedrez. Gracias a ella y los niños que asisten al lugar en compañía de sus padres, la sala infantil ha ido ganando más usuarios y despertando la curiosidad de quienes asisten a otros talleres que hay en la casa de la cultura.
As a closing activity, Maryangel made some beautiful different ones with the names of her students, which she gave to each one of them after a brief speech in which she thanked them for their attendance and the desire they have to continue learning how to play.
Como actividad de cierre, Maryangel realizó unos bonitos distintos con los nombres de sus estudiantes, que entregó a cada uno de ellos después de un breve discurso en el que les agradeció por la asistencia y las ganas que tienen de seguir aprendiendo a jugar.
In mid-December, a tournament was also held, in which the students played against their classmates and other children that the teacher invited to play. The tournament lasted about two hours and the first, second and third place winners took home a certificate and a shower of applause from those present. Afterwards everyone enjoyed the refreshments that the representatives and the teacher brought to share.
A mediados de diciembre, también se llevó a cabo un torneo, en el que los estudiantes se enfrentaron a sus compañeros y otros niños que la maestra invitó a jugar. El torneo duró alrededor de dos horas y los ganadores del primero, segundo y tercer lugar se llevaron un certificado a casa y una lluvia de aplausos por parte de quienes estaban presentes. Luego todos disfrutaron de los refrigerios que los representantes y la maestra llevaron para compartir.
The issue of users is very important, because without them, the existence of the library cannot be justified, and this is, perhaps, one of the biggest problems we face. There are days when no one shows up and the dead hours pass slowly and you feel like you are in a parallel reality where people forgot how to get there. At times like this, I start reading, writing or drawing, although that is another matter.
As an alternative solution, we made a sign that says that the library is open and we hang it every day in the window facing the avenue so that people can see it. After putting it up, a group of young people began to go more frequently to do their homework and several parents have come with their children to teach them what a library is, as if they were attending a prehistoric place, and after a few days they return with their children to do their homework, because they know very well the value of researching in this way and how reliable some books are, since not all the information is on the Internet.
El tema de los usuarios es muy importante, porque sin ellos la existencia de la biblioteca no puede ser justificada, y esto es, quizá, uno de los mayores problemas que enfrentamos. Hay días en que nadie aparece y las horas muertas pasan lentamente y sientes que estás en una realidad paralela donde la gente olvidó cómo llegar. En momentos así, me pongo a leer, escribir o dibujar, aunque eso es otro tema.
Como solución alternativa, hicimos un cartel que dice que la biblioteca está abierta y lo colgamos todos los días en la ventana que da a la avenida para que la gente lo vea. Después de ponerlo, un grupo de jóvenes empezó a ir con más frecuencia a hacer sus tareas y varios padres han venido con sus hijos a enseñarles lo que es una biblioteca, como si estuvieran asistiendo a un lugar prehistórico, y después de unos días regresan con sus hijos a hacer sus tareas, porque saben muy bien el valor de investigar de esta manera y lo confiables que son algunos libros, ya que no toda la información está en Internet.
The place is also visited by interesting people whose personalities are so unique and extraordinary that they impress. For example, sometimes we are visited by a man who is in his seventies, a polyglot and a professor of mathematics, and yet he continues to study and teach, and when he comes to the place it is to look for specific information that he will later teach his students. Like him, there are others who are curious to me, both for their genius and for their degree of madness (we are all a little crazy); although I will surely tell you about this on another occasion.
Al lugar también asisten personas interesantes, cuya personalidad es tan única y extraordinaria que impresionan. Por ejemplo, a veces somos visitados por un señor que ronda los setenta años, es políglota y profesor de matemáticas, y aun así, continua estudiando y enseñando y cuando se acerca al lugar es para buscar una información específica que luego enseñará a sus alumnos. Así como él, hay otros que me resultan curiosos, tanto por su genialidad como por su grado de locura (todos estamos un poco locos); aunque de esto, seguramente les hablaré en otra ocasión.
After the arrival of the internet, a question arose, will libraries continue to be useful? This situation makes me think about the future of libraries, at least the ones here in Venezuela, because I have heard that the government wants to do without them as if they were worthless and many people have no interest in them, thanks to the facilities offered by San Google. And if we talk about artificial intelligences such as the GPT Chat, which can even write an essay for you, the future becomes more and more uncertain for these areas of knowledge.
But here I have seen the love that people have for books and how interested many young people are in learning more about the world. I have also seen the amazed faces of the little ones when I show them the children's room and they glimpse the pile of books there, something that is simply priceless and makes it worth every second of time invested in this place to keep the service open.
Tras la llegada de internet, surgió una pregunta, ¿seguirán siendo útiles las bibliotecas? Esta situación me hace pensar en el futuro de las bibliotecas, al menos las que hay aquí en Venezuela, porque he escuchado que el gobierno quiere prescindir de ellas como si no valieran nada y mucha gente no tiene interés en ellas, gracias a las facilidades que ofrece San Google. Y si hablamos de inteligencias artificiales como el Chat GPT, que incluso puede escribir un ensayo por ti, el futuro se torna cada vez más incierto para estas áreas del saber.
Pero aquí he visto el amor que las personas tienen hacia los libros y lo interesados que están muchos jóvenes en aprender más sobre el mundo. También he visto la cara de asombro de los más pequeños cuando les muestro la sala infantil y vislumbran el montón de libros que hay, algo que sencillamente no tiene precio y hace que valga cada segundo de tiempo invertido en este lugar para mantener abierto el servicio.
So don't believe that young people don't want to read or have lost all interest in learning. We may be in the minority, but it can make a difference.

As long as the government does not decide to erase this place from the map, the library will always have its doors open to the public and the books will continue to await curious minds that want to read them. Así que no crean aquello de que los jóvenes no quieren leer o que han perdido todo interés por aprender. Tal vez seamos una minoría, pero eso puede hacer la diferencia.
