A True Story
A Little Context
Outside the grocery store early this morning, I heard an announcement from a government van that curfews will be imposed starting tonight at 11 pm. It's likely a reaction to the high number of new Covid-19 cases. It is very alarming.
I noticed that people were wearing masks and face shields today. And I did not see people huddled together for small talk or gossip, however fun that might be.
An Unexpected Visitor
It was a sunny Saturday morning. The sun was scorching hot and I was sweating all over while typing on the keyboard.
I was browsing through blog posts on #PeakD when I got back from my weekend marketing and grocery duty and heard someone calling outside. Two neighborhood kids offered to clean up the "front yard" of our house. The grass was getting taller and it was a messy sight. The timing was right so I obliged.
They usually step in when they see the messy frontage. I give them a few bucks for an hour's worth of work and biscuits or bread for snacks and they are happy with this arrangement. I also give them something as an added bonus if they did a good job. Today, the bonus was canned tuna from my wife's Christmas goodies bag. We're both #vegetarians, and no longer eat fish, so we thought that this was as good a time as any to give it away.
Out of the Blue
The unexpected weekend cleanup project began and I went out to see how they were doing. I had my phone with me so I took some photos.
They both worked really hard in pulling out all of the weeds. And cut off this tree that grew out of nowhere.
And even though it was only around an hour's work, both of them did their part well. They divided the work but was very flexible, helping each other out if there is a need; good teamwork for these two.
These ants made it difficult to bring the biodegradable waste to our neighbor's land/compost pit.
The kids did well and they deserved to get the bonus. I said thank you and asked them to come back in a couple of weeks.
With the space cleared, we're planning to put some plants and/or flowers to welcome guests and just brighten the day for passers-by. I'm happy that these kids are learning the value of work and how to take the initiative when they see an opportunity and will help them in life when they become adults.
My post is up to here. The rain fell and cooled the place already. I am now refreshed. Thanks for dropping by and reading about my weekend mini-project.
Have a fun and safe weekend, everyone!
