In their moment of greatest splendor, the brotherhoods of itinerant stonemasons who temporarily established themselves in a place until the temple for which they had been hired were erected, constituted, seen at least in an eminently romantic and metaphorical way, the precursors of the village teachers, who taught those subjects that the factual powers of the time, especially the Church, considered essential to safeguard the integrity of their flocks.

The people, illiterate by design, but subconsciously open to the seduction of the symbol, actively participated in the reading of that iconography that made the temples, especially the Romanesque ones, the focus of attention of some amazing stories, whose meaning, in many cases, it has been irretrievably lost, especially when reason and its implicit materialism made man refuse to look inside himself and look for the legacy of his ancestors in his genes.

Seeing these authentic stone books semi-destroyed and, above all, condemned to ostracism and excessive attacks by savages, is not only a moral attack against a grandiose Heritage that many countries do not possess, but that they would like to possess -in fact, more than one of our monasteries of the twelfth century went to the estates of the great magnates, such as Randolph Hearst, a character on whom the great Orson Welles based himself to make a true classic, such as his film 'Citizen Kane'- but also constitutes an affront to the memory of our elders, whose faith, there was a time when it could truly be said that 'moved mountains'.

Even so, badly wounded to death and their ancestral message mutilated, they have such an irresistible magnetism that seeing them silhouetted against those skies of the always wide Castile, as in this case, constitutes something more than a sentimental delight.

En su momento de mayor esplendor, las cofradías de canteros itinerantes que se establecían provisionalmente en un lugar hasta levantar el templo para el que habían sido contratados, constituían, vistos cuando menos de una manera eminentemente romántica y metafórica, los precursores de los maestros de pueblo, que enseñaban aquellas materias que los poderes fácticos de la época, sobre todo la Iglesia, consideraba imprescindibles para salvaguardar la integridad de sus rebaños.

El pueblo, analfabeto por designio, pero de subconsciente abierto a la seducción del símbolo, participaba activamente en la lectura de esa iconografía que hacía de los templos, sobre todo de los románicos, el foco de atención de unas historias asombrosas, cuyo significado, en muchos casos, se ha perdido irremediablemente, sobre todo cuando la razón y el materialismo implícito de ésta, hicieron que el hombre rechazara mirar en su interior y buscar en sus genes el legado de sus antepasados.

Ver estos auténticos libros de piedra semi destruidos y sobre todo condenados al ostracismo y a los ataques desmedidos de los salvajes, no sólo es un atentado moral contra un Patrimonio grandioso que muchos países no poseen, pero que querrían poseer -de hecho, más de uno de nuestros monasterios del siglo XII fue a parar a las fincas de los grandes magnates, como Randolph Hearst, personaje en el que se basó el genial Orson Welles para realizar un auténtico clásico, como es su película ‘Ciudadano Kane’- sino que además, constituye una afrenta a la memoria de nuestros mayores, cuya fe, hubo una época en la que verdaderamente se podría decir que ‘movió montañas’.

Aún así, malheridos de muerte y mutilado su ancestral mensaje, tienen un magnetismo tan irresistible, que verlos recortados contra esos cielos de la siempre ancha Castilla, como en este caso, constituye algo más que un deleite sentimental.
