It would surprise you to learn just how much valuable content you miss out on everyday by being tuned out or turned off. We all are pretty aware of our own priorities, most important are those taking place at the moment. Nonetheless, when someone speaks to you - LISTEN. Devote your attention to the speaker. One of the greatest compliments you can offer someone (anyone) is to listen. Good, bad, ugly, whether your interest is sparked or not ... keep your focus.
Listening is not always pleasant. Listening can evoke powerful emotions that, as a disciplined listener, should always be kept in check. Many verbal battles could be avoided if we would just take a moment (even if in disagreement) to acknowledge that what is being spoken is important to the speaker and importance deserves your attention! Anger takes the back seat. Keep it there. Never has a conversation ended better when anger entered into it. Lashing out is a losing proposition for both sides.
Focus, by the way, is turned off when you speak out of turn and genuine listening takes practice. When you take the time, and often patience, to hear someone out to conclusion you get a full picture and are more ready for a thoughtful response if one is required.
Uninterrupted listening is one of those gifts that keeps on giving. It makes you a better person. It creates stronger relationships. It strengthens trust. It stimulates. It makes you more aware. It encourages further conversations. It teaches. It provokes deeper thought.
Have a great day!
