As a woman, I have felt the pressure of society to want to be accepted within its standards, until one day it seems that you finish growing or more gray matter develops in your head, you stop and say, What am I doing?
Who hurt me so much? Some time ago, maybe 3 years ago, I began a process, at that time quite slow, of starting to love myself. I didn't even know that this process was to start loving myself and discover myself. I felt the need to be perfect at all times, I was ashamed of showing my true face to the world, to people, to my close friends. With my true face I mean my face without makeup, as I really am, without highlighting any feature with the help of cosmetics. My perception was quite altered, I remember many times not enjoying moments such as going to the pool and submerging myself, I did go sometimes but I didn't get in the water, many times I said no to a trip to the beach, all because of the fear that someone would see my face, as if that were something bad.
¿Quién me hizo tanto daño?
And come on, I don't consider myself an ugly person but before I used to feel insecure, I really love makeup, I've been practicing putting on makeup and watching videos on YouTube since I was about 12 years old and with my mom's supervision, for me it was a relief, it was like playing with dolls, and I don't know at what point that fun became my shield and my barrier. But I do have an idea of how it started, when I put on makeup I always put my best effort and there were always people commenting something positive about it and asking me for advice, but I don't know at what point it happened that I thought that when I wasn't wearing makeup anymore the comments would be negative...
Well in that process, I decided to start to stop using makeup on some occasions, I knew that some days I would go out just as I am. At first it was hard for me and I wanted to put a mask on and that was one of the slowest acceptances I've had because I looked in the mirror to find mistakes and tell myself that I looked tired and excuses for not loving myself.
On the other hand, this year came with the best. I always use to straighten my hair with a flat iron because I believed that it suited my face type, other things also influenced it, like some people used to say that I didn't comb my hair, in fact when you go to work, they point out that your hair should be presentable but when they see that it's curly they start making obvious comments and when you wear straight hair they give you compliments, implying that your hair is not totally accepted in society.
This year I worked up the courage, especially because I had already seen many girls and influencers doing hair routines, the curly method, and other things since last year. I wasn't interested in watching those videos but they came to my algorithm and one day I said, well I'll buy some products that are for my hair type and I'll let it rest, just to be at home, and wow, the first time I applied a few products, I fell in love with my hair again, I was very happy to go out everywhere and it gives me a very boho vibe.
So now, I can easily wear my hair natural, my face without having to correct it with makeup, I dress how I want without thinking that someone has to approve my outfit. I've always been a person who doesn't like to get involved in other people's lives, I like to focus on myself but even so, I had caught that social stigma.
The message is simple. Live your life, be you. At the end of the day you're going to go to your house, you're going to sleep in your bed, you're going to eat your food, everything there is yours, that is, only you should care.
