Is Being Selfish Controversial? Is Being Selfish Bad? - Jo Roderick
Is being selfish bad, or are we just told this by default? Is being selfish controversial at all, or are we just denying the truth about ourselves? Are you wondering, “How selfish am I?”
Are you selfish in relationships? Selfishness and loving oneself doesn't always translate into selfishness in relationships. You can learn how to be selfish in a good way because selfishness is nature at work.
So, how selfish are you? Are you a selfish person looking to learn how to be selfish and happy with being that person no one likes?

What I am about to say will be labelled as 'Something Controversial', but I'm no stranger to controversy.
I bet that got your attention. Listen, it might be controversial ... but it is true. We are all selfish. Yes, I said it.
The first step is in acknowledging it. The sooner we admit it, the quicker we can move on to behaving in a less selfish manner.
Why is being selfish not really that bad? It's the way we are usually programmed, and from birth.
I know, people tell us that we should not to be selfish; learn to play well with others; think of others first; don't be selfish! Then they behave in a selfish manner regardless.
By nature, we are self-centred. This, of course, ensures survival. Self-preservation isn't always a bad thing. If we don't survive, we are of no use to anybody else. We need to look after ourselves so we can be of some good to other people.
Therefore, we must think of ourselves first. It's sometimes a bit hard for us to get around the fact that we do need to think of ourselves first because if we do not actually think of ourselves first, eventually we just run out of steam; run out of energy; and just run out of the joy of life, and we are just a misery to be around.
However, we are not always in survival mode. We just tend to get stuck in this me me me kind of approach. Often we're just in selfish mode. Me, myself, and I. Give me! Give me! Give me!
We can choose differently, and herein lies what makes each person different. Do you choose to acknowledge your selfish side, and be less selfish, in the hopes that you will be more kind to other people?
We don't often stop to think about our actions. We just automatically go into survival mode, and it's just all about ourselves. How many times do you stop to think about what your actions are doing, and what they bring into the world?
How will you choose? Let me know how you feel about this concept in the comments below.
