Meeting a hooded figure in the middle of the street can be a bit creepy. This is what happened to me when walking through Havana I came across a figure dressed in a large cloak covering his face. However, I soon realised that I should not be frightened as everyone around me seemed comfortable and no one showed any surprise at the incognito figure. The character actually wore a cassock and turned out to be a life-size copper sculpture.
I had just arrived at the entrance of the Hotel Fraile, located in one of the streets of Old Havana.
The Hotel is located on Calle Teniente Rey, between Calle Oficios and Calle Mercaderes. After this first encounter, I couldn't resist the temptation to go inside and explore. I was surprised by all that was inside, and I loved its design, set in a medieval monastery, full of images and objects that evoked that period.
The monk at the entrance is not the only one who welcomes us. As I entered the lobby, I found another one sitting on a simple wooden bench, seemingly praying in silence. As in a real monastery, tranquillity is something you can feel all over the place, in fact, visitors were not allowed to enter the inner courtyard leading to the rooms in order to maintain the peace and privacy of the guests.
The floor slabs and the stained-glass windows in the doors are decorated with religious symbols and crucifixes. The ceiling lamps were similar to those in a church, they have an iron lattice in the shape of a sphere with light bulbs that looked like lighted candles. The bar has a large wooden bar and on the back wall there is a mural depicting monks performing various tasks in an abbey. Everywhere you could see decorations that gave the impression of being in a truly spiritual place.
At the back of the building is a beautiful inner courtyard with a stone fountain in the centre. Unfortunately I could only photograph it from afar, as this is where the rooms are located. In this space there is also another sculpture of a monk. Personally, I think they are the ones who really take care of the place 馃槈.
As this hotel is located in the historical centre of the city, the surrounding area is full of places of historical interest. Like many of the buildings in this area, El Fraile Hotel preserves the magic and beauty and details of the old colonial dwellings. This is a place where culture and history are uniquely intertwined.
All the staff working in the hotel are very pleasant and attentive. I am sure that staying here must be an unforgettable experience.

Encontrarse en medio de la calle con un personaje encapuchado puede resultar un tanto escalofriante. Esto fue lo que me ocurri贸 cuando caminando por la Habana me top茅 con una figura vestida con gran capa que le cubr铆a el rostro. Sin embargo, pronto me di cuenta de no deb铆a asustarme ya que todos a mi alrededor parec铆an c贸modos y nadie mostraba sorpresa por el inc贸gnito personaje. La figura en realidad, portaba una sotana y resultaba ser una escultura de cobre de tama帽o real.
Acababa yo de llegar a la entrada del Hotel Fraile, ubicado en una de las calles de La Habana Vieja.
El Hotel est谩 ubicado en la Calle Teniente Rey, entre las calles Oficios y Mercaderes. Despu茅s de este primer encuentro, no pude resistir la tentaci贸n de entrar y explorar su interior. Me sorprendi贸 todo lo que hab铆a dentro, y me encant贸 su dise帽o ambientado en un monasterio medieval, repleto de im谩genes y objetos que evocaban esa 茅poca.
El monje de la entrada no es el 煤nico que nos da la bienvenida. Al entrar al lobby me encontr茅 con otro sentado en un sencillo banco de madera, parec铆a estar rezando en silencio. C贸mo en un aut茅ntico monasterio, la tranquilidad es algo que se percibe por todo el lugar, de hecho, estaba prohibido el paso a los visitantes al patio interior que da acceso a las habitaciones para as铆 mantener el sosiego y la intimidad de los hu茅spedes.
Las losas del suelo y los vitrales en las puertas est谩n decoradas con s铆mbolos religiosos y crucifijos. Las l谩mparas de techo eran similares a las de una iglesia, tienen un entramado de hierro en forma de esfera con bombillas que parec铆an velas encendidas. El bar tiene una gran barra de madera y en la pared del fondo tiene un mural que representa a varios monjes realizando diversas labores en una abad铆a. Por todas partes se pod铆an ver adornos que daban la impresi贸n de estar realmente en un lugar espiritual.
Al fondo de la edificaci贸n hay un hermoso patio interior con una fuente de piedra en el centro. Lamentablemente solo pude fotografiarlo desde lejos, ya que este es el lugar donde se encuentran las habitaciones. En este espacio tambi茅n se halla otra escultura de un monje. Personalmente, creo que ellos son los que realmente cuidan del lugar 馃槈.
Al estar este Hotel ubicado en el casco hist贸rico de la ciudad, los alrededores est谩n repletos de sitios de inter茅s hist贸rico. Como muchas de las edificaciones en esta zona, El Hotel Fraile conserva la magia y la belleza y los detalles de las antiguas viviendas coloniales. Este es un lugar donde la cultura y la historia se entrelazan de manera 煤nica.
Todo el personal que trabaja en el hotel es muy agradable y atento. Estoy segura de que hospedarse aqu铆 debe ser una experiencia 煤nica e inolvidable.
