It's not as relevant on steemit as other blog sites as there is a way to get donations but many bloggers use other platforms as well and got used to the "tip jar "

Steemit is like anything else low hanging fruit gets picked first and the most, if your posts resonate with a whale you can score a nice chunk. If you get 600 minnows you might get 6-10 sbd but one whale
