First Steps in Ikariam
[English Version]
I show you a very interesting game for lovers of real-time strategies, battles and economy as pillars of gameplay, is a fairly simple browser game, but very nice in the visual aspect that since 2008 has seemed to me a fairly complete game for those who like to mix military strategy with resource management. A few years ago I reviewed this game and I have decided to create, return to the game on a new server, thus creating a small guide to get started in this game. In addition, I would like to show the qualities of this game that seems to me to be underrated and much attacked by members of its own community.
The main reason why it is an underrated game and with the contempt of many players is that since 2008 has not changed much its mechanics, complexity and has not added many new features, yet it is a complex game, which mixes various aspects such as politics, economics, military strategy, trade and other things that despite being a video game with many years of existence, few free games contemplate this level of complexity, in a nice visual environment.
Gameplay and First Steps
Once we have our city, the first thing to do is to look at what kind of island we will start our adventure on. The islands in this representation of the ancient Mediterranean vary mainly by resources which is what matters most to us, wine, crystal, sulphur and marble, these are the resources we need in the empire, but each island can provide only one, which means we must expand our empire by colonising other islands to provide our empire with these materials, although another way is to buy them or plunder other cities. For all this it is important to know what resources we will have in our first steps, the best to start on an island of marble or wine to expand your empire in a more "peaceful" way, because with marble we can build buildings and palaces on other islands and wine means expansion of the population, which translates into more tax revenue.
I have had to start on a marble island, which makes my strategy a peaceful expansion in the first steps more towards economy, as marble is an asset that sells very well.
Technologies and Attacking the Barbarians
Because I start on a marble island, I have created the necessary army to attack the barbarians on my island. This village is a kind of wild card that when attacking is not a confrontation against another player, but we still take advantage of stealing their resources by force of sword. With each attack this village becomes stronger and stronger, but in these first steps it is important to get these resources, as they will help to build the buildings of our city, this will save money on sending workers to the sawmill to get wood and we can concentrate on the first vital technologies for our empire.
To fight the barbarians, I used 3 spearmen against just one of them. The battle was over in two rounds and I was able to plunder their resources. We must create enough soldiers to fight the barbarians twice before expanding the quartermaster or city centre. I made the mistake of doing it backwards and had to send some workers to get wood, which left my gold income in the red for a couple of hours.
It is important when attacking to have the merchant ships available to move resources, they cost gold, but are absolutely vital to the whole game. It's not a waste of money at all.
Technologies also require money, so not including workers in the sawmill to lower tax collections is a strategic move, as we will need our scientists to get technologies that allow us to expand our empire, to exploit the quarry and the main resources, create new soldiers, create taverns to populate our empire, among other things, create a shop to trade with other players, all these technologies are important in our beginnings, so it could be considered as a priority. Keeping in mind that when we start, we have a protection from attacks from other players, so we can focus on our city.
These would be my first moves for this new game in Ikariam, a user guide that I can expand a little more as I continue to play, as it is a game that seems very simple, but has a great complexity that I like.
