Corpus Harenae.
There are places where stillness occupies other meanings, places where the constant pilgrimage of the elements is the normal and therefore what we assume for stillness. So it is on the coast of Puerto escondido. The eternal ritual of the waves undressing in a rumor of foam to embrace the shores, seagulls unraveling between blues and air; that salty air that overwhelms the breath of the breather.
That morning that stillness was broken in motionless pieces of silence, the birds neglected their usual lar and went to fly insistently further over the sandy beach, below them a group of curious tourists were amazed with something that had arrived there. A body. Face down, semi-burned and wearing only shreds of what appeared to be an ocher-colored synthetic material. A grimace of pain was imprinted on his face and it was evident from the trail left in the sand coming from the beach.
I, who had arrived there in pursuit of curiosity, felt a particular impression at the sight of that spoil of humanity. Of course I had already seen a couple of corpses in those sands but this and the conditions in which it was found was something else to say the least. The murmur around the body was audible, exclamations in different languages commenting on what they were witnessing to which the ranger only managed to nod with a half gesture of security. A party of fishermen had already gone for the authorities so they would be there at any moment. Above us, the seagulls were having their own hullabaloo and shamelessly dared to approach the body until the authorities could be seen approaching from the side of the kiosks.
In front, as always, came Corporal Mendía with his chest out walk that rather resulted in a martial grimace; behind him Prefect Carrizo, in shirt sleeves, hurrying his pace while repeatedly adjusting his glasses; and lastly, with more restraint, Curita Rojas, in civilian clothes, walking with his hands behind his back. As soon as they arrived, each person assumed his or her role. The priest to cross himself, the corporal to interrogate the witnesses and the prefect, well, the prefect to put on his glasses while he wiped his broad forehead with a handkerchief. Everything indicates that there has been a crime, sentenced the corporal; there is no evidence of identification at first sight, affirmed the prefect; Corpus harenae recited the priest in a resurrected language.
What happened next is part of the legends of Puerto escondido. When Corporal Mendía organized the men who would lift the body and as soon as they had grabbed it, a terrifying exclamation came out of the mouth of that creature that flooded the ears of all those present. The men immediately let go of him at the sudden surprise, the body writhed in an attempt to escape, crawling away only to be diluted in the sand with our astonishment as a witness. Above the seagulls scattered, below the tourists claimed that they understood the exclamation of that entity in their own languages; the prefect was exchanging complaints with the Corporal and the priest only managed to say in rickety Latin: Corpus in arena versa in arena.
The end.
