Mugs are inexpensive to purchase, so why would someone go through all of the trouble to create a mug or cup out of clay slip? 馃槂 I want to create some unique gifts for others and they start off looking like a standard mug.
I bought some fresh clay slip when I went to the pottery store. I already had some ceramic molds and I also borrowed some from my friend who is also a potter. I have learned from taking classes at the senior center that the mold is just the beginning of the creation. So many things can be added, taken off, and modified to create master pieces if you have a vision. Some of the differences can be created with slip tracing, some with different types of glazes and others with wire.
The clay is still too wet to trim right now. I have to wait until it becomes leather hard before I can continue to work with it. For now though, this is the first step in a longer process. There is something very satisfying about watching your creation take shape. I will be able to trim, embellish, fire, glaze and personalize these mugs in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, I am going to pour some more slip so that I will have enough items to justify running my kiln.
