The expression "cows in the road" is something we often use in our family when we encounter some kind of problem in everyday matters. The most curious thing is that this expression originates from an anecdote about my father, which occurred in the early 1980s... It turns out that my father at that time worked as the head of signal transmission stations for one of our private television networks called "VENEVISION," and in those years, one of its repeater stations was located in the mountains of Terepaima National Park, near the city of Barquisimeto, Lara State... The thing is, my father, who loved to share an afternoon of good whiskey and cigars with his friends, was at one of these gatherings when he was contacted by radio from the main station in Caracas and told to get to the Terepaima station as quickly as possible. The station was about 24 kilometers up the mountain, along quite steep and poorly maintained dirt roads...

My father, who by then had already been working for that television company for over 15 years, immediately said goodbye to his friends and set off on his route in his newly assigned Jeep CJ7, owned by the same company where he worked. My father always denied being drunk. But the truth is, knowing him as we all did at home, he was most likely already a little tipsy. Besides, Dad was the "adventurous" type, and the mere thought of facing a mountain road at night in a new 4x4 was something that got his spirits racing. He also loved speed, so driving fast was perfectly normal for him, although sometimes intimidating for anyone in the passenger seat. Fortunately, that night he was alone on that road, which ended at the repeater station, located on a mountain peak over 1400 meters above sea level and usually shrouded in dense fog. But his job was to fix problems wherever they occurred, and it was something he loved doing, by the way...

That didn't end well. Just a few kilometers from the station that was malfunctioning, on a long stretch of straight, flat road, my father was up to his usual antics. He accelerated hard through the dense fog (he loved doing that and watching the huge clouds of dust rise behind him, illuminated by the taillights; in some ways, Dad was like a giant, mischievous 6'3" kid). Suddenly (or so my father recounted), something exploded, the sound like a bomb. The only thing my father remembered after that impact was finding himself inside the upside-down vehicle in a shallow ravine on the right side of the road. Fortunately, he seemed to be okay, although his chest hurt slightly. He managed to get out of the overturned car and saw severe damage to the front; even the radiator was ruptured and leaking steam. A few meters away, toward the road, he heard the unmistakable mooing of a desperate cow. He took a flashlight from his toolbox and climbed up to the path in that direction, where he found the poor animal lying there with some of its entrails exposed, seemingly dying. Dad said that if he'd had a gun with him at that moment, he would have shot that animal to spare it the suffering...

But my father, by then a man nearing 50 who had been single until 40, had been through all sorts of things in his rather wild life. So he didn't lose his temper and simply picked up his radio and called the patrolmen at the same station and told them, "I hit a cow on the road. I'm fine, but the animal is dying. Come and get your shotguns." Presumably, the patrolmen reacted immediately, and Octavio (that was the name of the patrolman, whom my sisters and I saw as a grandfather) arrived shortly afterward on a mule at the scene of the accident and, almost without saying a word to my father, shot the cow, immediately ending the unfortunate animal's suffering. My father could only manage to say, "Thank goodness it wasn't me who was hurt, because you might have shot me," to which Octavio replied with a smirk, "I should actually shoot you, maybe then you'll stop using this road as your racetrack."... At that time, we lived in a house near the station on the same mountain. So, within minutes, my mother knew everything that had happened and was seething with fury, because my father, as I said before, sometimes acted like a teenager. Although he was a wonderful father and husband, and that's undeniable. His adventurous nature always got him into a lot of trouble...

Dad knew the owners of the animal; in fact, the owner of the ranch where the cow belonged was one of his "whiskey and tobacco buddies," and he admitted that the animal shouldn't have been wandering outside the fences and in the middle of the road. My father even offered to pay for the cow, but the owner wouldn't accept. So, they reached an agreement that went something like this: My father would keep the cow, Octavio would take care of the skinning, gutting, and butchering, and "Doctor Pancho" (the cow's original owner) would organize a weekend barbecue and drinking party at his ranch, a party to which almost everyone living within the national park's boundaries was invited鈥攁nd there were quite a few of them. My mother almost divorced my father that time, but as usual, she ended up forgiving him and even attended that celebration, the main reason (or excuse) for which was that Armando Linares (my father) had escaped unharmed... And from then on, my father would often say when he had a problem: "That's just a cow in the road"...
