"Collapse" is perhaps the first word that would come to your mind if you arrive at 7:00 AM on the morning of any given day, at the streets of the western edge of Montalbán, the town where I have always lived... And the thing is, those streets cannot hide what years and years of abandonment and economic crisis have done to this place... And today, when since the middle of this year news is beginning to be heard of the improvements that are occurring in the cities of the state capitals, and even in some towns closer to those urban centers; the feeling of being in a place that does not seem to be able to recover increases. And the fact is that Montalbán, like many small towns in Venezuela, in addition to the onslaught of years and years of crisis, also suffered an impressive population exodus. For me, who am 55 years old, it is not difficult to remember the streets full of activity, the people coming and going from their jobs, the thriving agricultural and livestock activity, the pristine streets with freshly painted facades and well-maintained pavement, the crews of municipal employees maintaining the public spaces, the police officers stationed on the corners ensuring public order... That is why also to me, when I wander through these streets that are part of my past and present; also the word "collapse" comes to my head and stays there as if it were never going to want to leave...

"Colapso" es, quizás, la primera palabra que llegaría a tu mente si llegas a las 7:00 AM, la mañana de un día cualquiera, a las calles del margen oeste de Montalbán, el pueblo en donde he vivido siempre... Y es que dichas calles no pueden ocultar lo que años y años de abandonment y crisis económica han hecho a este lugar... Y hoy por hoy, cuando desde mediados de este año comienzan a escucharse noticias de las mejoras que están ocurriendo en las ciudades de las capitales de estado, e incluso en algunos pueblos más cercanos a esos centros urbanos, la sensación de estar en un lugar que no parece poder recuperarse se acrecienta. Y es que Montalbán, al igual que muchos pueblos pequeños de Venezuela, además de los embates de años y años de crisis, también sufrió un éxodo poblacional impresionante. Para mí, que tengo 55 años de edad, no es difícil recordar las calles llenas de actividad, las personas yendo y viniendo de sus trabajos, la actividad agrícola y pecuaria pujante, las calles prístinas con fachadas recién pintadas y pavimento bien mantenido, las cuadrillas de empleados municipales manteniendo el ornato, los policías apostados en las esquinas velando por el orden público... Es por eso que también a mí, cuando deambulo por estas calles que forman parte de mi pasado y presente, también la palabra "colapso" se me viene a la cabeza y se queda allí, como si no fuese a querer irse nunca...
