Hello my Nug,

We have entered autumn. It feels like not much has changed yet lots has changed, which is why it’s important to write things down.

Your language and problem solving skills keep growing. The idea of time and separate days is becoming more clear to you. You can name all the days and months (especially if singing) although their rigid order and distinctness is still elusive. For example, you say “yesterday” to mean the past and “tomorrow” to mean the future (at least that’s how it seems to us).

Another big development is in your drawing and colouring skills. You get lots of practice at school and are always happy to colour at home. You’re not quite inside the lines yet, but your intention to colour separate objects is clear. You can also very impressively watch Mom or Dad draw something then try it yourself. We draw a lot of croissants with a face and limbs (based on your stuffie) for you, and you nailed all the elements on one of your first tries.

In the same area, you have been very interested in the first letter of your name. You know the uppercase and lowercase versions, and delight in spotting them everywhere in the world. And just the other day, you traced the printing of your own name for the first time (that Mom and Dad have witnessed, at least). So we got out some letter-tracing workbooks and you’ve already gotten the hang of tracing ABCs.

Next year you’ll start pre-K, and we figure you’ll handle it just fine.

Complex and abstract ideas are your playground now, with lots of pretending and experimenting with words and concepts. You’ve invented your own version of hide and seek after watching other kids play it.

What else? We’ve been on another plane trip, and you continue to handle travel well. You are comfortable being away from Mom and Dad for most of the day—this isn’t surprising as you do this pretty much every day at school, but it’s good to know you can do it in situations outside of school too.

Here’s a good one: your hugs and cuddles have gotten stronger and more intentional. There’s nothing like a giant squeeze from you!

Much Love,
Dad

This series of blogs is to catalog the memories, milestones, and reflections of parenthood. Perhaps one day you (the Nug) will be curious to read them! In the meantime, they’re a nice way for Dad to process this whole parenting thing. He’s a writer, so putting words out into the world is relaxing, therapeutic, and fun!
