This is not a love story // My review of the story: The case of old Tamara (English/Spanish)
A loving greeting to all my Hive friends, this wonderful Saturday I am encouraged to participate in the NaNoWriMo Hive Book Club x Scholar Scribe Review Contest. Reviewing a story by one of my favorite Hive authors, as far as short stories go, I'm referring to @chacald.dcymt. In the time I've been on Hive I've been a follower of her stories and I'm always fascinated with her creativity, good composition and mastery over each of her stories.
The Case of Old Tamara story. It is a short story that from the first lines leaves you suspended in the feelings of its protagonist Tamara. It is she who, unknowingly, tells you the story as she goes through the house. As she moves forward, so does the reader, as if they were walking together in the narrative.
Tamara is an older woman, she could be my mother or any other woman consumed by the madness of 40 years of marriage. The author gives us an image of Tamara as a child, a little 10 year old girl holding a knife, her father a butcher by trade teaches her how to handle it, she emphasizes that this is something you don't forget. So Tamara has some traumas from her childhood that she mistakes for virtues, but in the end she unleashes all the fear and violence she carries inside her. Another characteristic that the author gives us is that Tamara is a small, thin and fragile woman; this helps to better understand why our protagonist feels so helpless in her own home.
Confused and tormented by a possible paranoid disorder, which she tries to control with drugs, she ends up murdering her life partner. The ending is fascinating, because it leaves you with two paths to follow. One of them suggests that the protagonist was not lucid when she committed the murder, the other is the complete opposite, Tamara is annoyed and tired, she sits in front of the window as if nothing important had happened, as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. What I can say about my experience as a reader of this brilliant story of intrigue, is that I'll take the second option.
I felt when I read the ending Tamara's relief, I took a deep breath just as she did, as if we were both safe. The story leaves us with many questions that, I am sure, many older women will know how to answer. No one knows what goes on inside a marriage, but I have known many women who tremble when the man they have shared their whole life with walks through the front door of the house, I also know many who find it hard to sleep next to their husband.
This story led me into the deep waters of dysfunctional relationships. I have worked for years with women who have faced situations of violence and Tamara reminded me perfectly of many of the real stories I have known. Of course, the women I share with have not killed their husbands. But the feeling of fear and distrust, is exactly the same. There is another feeling I find in the story, it is hatred, in the story it manifests itself in the form of murder, but in real life it is just an internal monster that is devouring people. Also losing the ability to recognize the person you live with, we have heard many times the phrase: You are nothing like the man I fell in love with. How far can this idea go? The author definitely captured in a masterful way the alienation of a woman tormented by a too long relationship.
Well, this is just my point of view, but I invite you to read the story and to accompany Tamara in her sordid journey, so you can feel in your own flesh what it feels like to be her and make the most difficult decision. Congratulations to the author, I hope to continue reading material of this quality in Hive.

The case of old Tamara (Ingles/Español)
