Hello, Geek Zone community!

Sometimes we all need a break from life, most people find it to its liking as a weekend escape or a trip to the mountains, but I found that gaming does fit my life the best, it makes me feel relaxed and like I have rested from a long week full of work, and it does it by being fun and telling a deep story filled with humanity and love, something that I love about indie games is that they do care for the storytelling in games.

But why would I like to talk about some random Indie game? You may ask. Because is not about the budget, but about the story, is not about the development, but about the human touch it has, this game will give you a soft, warm touch of humanity while remaining in a fantasy full of supernatural entities, so let me introduce you to Coffee Talk.

Coffee Talk

Made by me on Canva from a screenshot of Day 3 of the game.

Coffee Talk (2020), is a game that is set to be a bunch of deep woven stories that make you feel human, is about how people are all humans and that sometimes we all need to have a coffee break while keeping you from the eyes of the Barista and showing you that you and your actions do matter to others.

From that start we being our life as the mysterious barista, a shady human in a fantasy Seattle, filled to the top with Werewolves, Elf, Vampires, Succubi, Mermaids, Cat people, and many other fantasy species, all living together in a somewhat peaceful city with its law and order set in place, and its political scheme is shown to us by the daily newspaper at the beginning of each day.

Yet as we are some common guy that is just living his life, we are shown that the thing he loves the most is serving Coffee to his guesses and clients, with a lovely soundtrack that keeps you relaxed and a focus on elements like making coffee drinks and the latte art, this game gives us something else to focus on we are not usually presented with.

Because this game is as much about proper customer service and stories as it is about loving coffee and enjoying a good conversation among people, human people (Forget about the whole racism, fantasy, and all of that, these characters are at the bottom of their hearts, all human).

True Latte art, not like the ones I make

In fact, by the time I ended the game, I had an urge to make myself a good mochaccino, so I could sit and relax while writing this piece up, but I discovered in-game skills are not tradable to real life, so I had to endure a latte coffee.

One way or another this game shows us deep humble humanity while slowly weeds its storytelling, from the perspective of a human heart that understands all the other species, and I have to love that and give it credit because of the several plot lines in the game are each one of them a piece of art.

We see modern cultural issues about the job revolution we are having with the introduction of the freelance jobs, we see love affairs that are born out of the family in a fight and deep racial issues that comes with multiracial love and genders, we see them all reflected on a single game, but there is much more than that.

Tought subjets to approach

The player is constantly pushed to understand, learn and handle more coffee and more talks, and it is during those talking times that we are shown a world of wonders, from the social aspects of this alternate dimension of Seattle to the complexity of humanity of our dimension, because all this game had to add was mixing fantasy with real life, but yet it still made a lot of difference for the Player.

As gamers, most of us have lost touch with the human dilemma, about how hard it is to be human as we are slowly but surely dehumanized in our office jobs and our communication becomes more and more boring, simplistic, and inhuman. We slowly become drones that work for big companies and all we do is reply to scripted talks over and over again, losing all touch we had with our hearts.

The relaxed parts of the story

And this game came, to take that missing spot on our hearts while gaming, for someone like me who jobs in the service area, I have to admit that by the time I played it, I have got used to blatantly ignoring that the clients are also people, with their stories, their lives, their feelings and their way of living. So the game taught me a lesson as a human, I should at least, do their a service of being polite, listen to them, and enjoy it, because sometimes their stories can teach me more than just to be human, those can teach me to love humanity as a whole just as this game did.

Astronaut, Neil, the real player from my eyes

We all can take a good relaxing time while playing Coffee Talk, focus on their stories and learn a bit of humanity while it, we are all meant to be human, and we should not forget about it even while playing a game, because, at the end of all, we are just people, just like the people of the Coffee Talk.
