Lately, the best birthdays seem to fall on Wednesdays 馃き鈥攁nd today, Wednesday, May 6, 2026, that holds true once again with the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the choral ensemble to which I belong: the Sim贸n Bol铆var National Choir 鉂わ笍 As you can see in the photos I鈥檓 sharing, and although I was just presented with an award recognizing my nine years of service here, I am actually still one month shy of reaching that exact milestone with the group. Nevertheless, the event held to honor the singers鈥攁ttended by the leadership of Venezuela鈥檚 System of Youth and Children鈥檚 Orchestras and Choirs鈥攚as a truly wonderful gesture.
It still amazes me how a unique and special day can lift the spirits of everyone involved in this project鈥攁nd it is simply due to that sense of belonging. Every person who has sung here has a dreamlike story behind them; as I have mentioned many times, the National Choir is composed of singers from all over the country鈥攑eople who had to leave their home states to pursue formal higher education in vocal studies in the capital, for ultimately, it remains the best option for our profession. Many of us were already singing in our regional choirs鈥攕uch as my wife and I, who come from the Maracay branch鈥攁nd this choral ensemble served as a source of support for us when we left our hometowns and our parents behind to embark on our musical journey.
It sounds easy to say "20 years," but there is so much work and effort behind it鈥攁nd I say this as someone who has been part of this project for barely nine years, having joined the ensemble during one of the most pivotal moments in my country's history. This is no ordinary choir; comprising students and professionals of operatic singing, the institution has recognized our potential to tackle virtually any repertoire. We cannot claim to have a single, particular style, as we are capable of performing Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic music, as well as madrigals, salsa, and an endless array of other genres. Nor is our work routine typical: in the morning, we might be performing a Verdi Requiem, while in the afternoon, we are singing African chants鈥攁nd let me tell you, we certainly possess the stamina to keep up with it all, and that is precisely what makes us special. We have the opportunity to work with renowned musicians from all over the world without ever having to leave our own country鈥攁nd, of course, we cannot forget the international tours: one of those unexpected gifts in life that you certainly don't anticipate when you first join the choir.
I hold this world鈥攚hich God has ordained for me as a member of this choir鈥攊n the highest regard; in fact, my primary reason for wanting to be here was that God Himself told me to come. I could not explain it to you in as much detail as I felt it, but I first discovered the choir in 2011, back when it was still undergoing a process of transformation and did not yet possess the renown it enjoys today. I remember I was visiting Caracas, chatting with some friends in the hallways of the headquarters, when suddenly I heard the sound of the most beautiful chords in the world. The people I was with didn't even notice as I slowly drifted away; the sound was celestial鈥攊t was God made manifest in music. I followed it, and then I did something that would be considered unforgivable during a rehearsal today: I opened the door to the room where the music was coming from. They didn't stop playing鈥擨 had been very stealthy鈥攂ut the moment I stepped inside, my life changed forever. Tears welled up in my eyes, and I knew that, eventually, I would have to leave my home behind; for if something like this existed right here in my own country, then I simply had to be a part of it 馃檹
Of course, God鈥檚 plans were different鈥攁lbeit leading to the same outcome鈥攆or I did not join the choir until 2017, at a time when I thought the situation in the country would force me to return home. To gain admission here, I had to study harder than I ever had in my life鈥攁nd that is saying something, given that I already knew music was no easy profession, as both my parents are teachers. Today, I find it quite effortless to sight-read new works on a daily basis and have them performance-ready鈥攆or both concerts and recordings鈥攁fter just a few hours of rehearsal; this, then, is the justification for all those hours spent studying solf猫ge, harmony, vocal technique, musical style, history, secondary instruments, and so much more. Even so, I cannot honestly say it was difficult鈥攆or, ultimately, music runs through our veins鈥攖hough we certainly must remain focused on excellence, just as one must in every aspect of life. Right now, in fact, we are still facing mind-boggling challenges: we are about to perform a work by Wagner at the Teresa Carre帽o Theater鈥攁 performance for which tickets sold out weeks ago鈥攜et we still feel there are countless details left to refine. But that, after all, is part of the thrill of making music.
Today is one of those days when going to work will be more beautiful and rewarding than ever. Usually, there is a surprise in store for us on our anniversary, but I do know that we won't be having a rehearsal; instead, we鈥檒l be doing a live radio broadcast right here at our own headquarters. We鈥檒l almost certainly be singing something鈥攐f that, I have absolutely no doubt. It would have been wonderful to celebrate with our grand anniversary concert, but since today is Wednesday, the timing just doesn't quite work out. We鈥檝e scheduled that event for May 16th鈥攁nd wow, it is going to be the best concert of the year, without a doubt. For my part, there is no question that I have found a truly special place and met people who have changed my life forever; so I bless them, I bless my surroundings, and I bless my own talent鈥攚hich comes from God, and which I place entirely at His disposal 馃檹 Thank you to all of you who faithfully read my musings and life updates here on Hive. I love writing about music and the experiences God gifts me through it. And get ready鈥攂ecause we鈥檙e going to be celebrating this anniversary with so many events that, before we know it, we鈥檒l have hit the 21-year mark!
