Happy start to the weekend, everyone, especially to the members of the Hive travel community, Worldmappin!. Today, I’d like to share my experience and photographs from a visit to the Vatican Museums, which I had the chance to enjoy last year, right around this time, during the last week of October. This post marks the fifth installment of my visit, and here you will find rooms and chapels showcasing some of the most impressive frescoes imaginable, magnificent works of art that span the entire ceilings and walls of these spaces. Everyone talks about the Sistine Chapel, but long before reaching it, one can already marvel at frescoes that are deeply historic, even if they aren't as widely famous. Here, you’ll be able to appreciate much of that...
Hall of the Immaculate Conception, Vatican Museums
Hall of Constantine in the Vatican Museums
Sala de Constantino
As you finish your tour of the Gallery of Maps, a truly magical part of the visit to the Vatican Museums begins. The highlight is the historic Sistine Chapel, the very place where cardinals gather to elect a new Pope for the Catholic Church, but, to my surprise, before reaching it, you can spend hours wandering through various halls filled with frescoes. It makes you reflect on the countless hours these artists must have spent lying near the ceilings or against the walls, working with extreme care to avoid any mistakes that could ruin the painstaking process of painting or creating art on wet plaster or lime.
Constantine's battle against Maxentius
Among the rooms I was able to visit, in the order I discovered them during my guided tour, the first was the Hall of the Immaculate Conception, which made me realize that everything I would see afterward would be truly impressive. Fresco-style paintings cover the ceilings and walls in every corner; it is nearly impossible to take them all in during a single, quick visit. This room was painted by Francesco Podesti, while the next one, the Hall of Constantine, features work by Raphael Sanzio, as do many other spaces in the Vatican, most notably the painting The Battle of Constantine against Maxentius. Just look at the photographs; it is an incredibly impressive piece, and it was one of the paintings I examined in the greatest detail at the time.
Hall of Heliodorus, Vatican Museums
Room of the Segnatura, Vatican Museums
Estancia de la Signatura
Next, we enter another room featuring works by Raphael Sanzio himself. This space is part of the "Raphael Rooms" (Stanze di Raffaello) located in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, a series of four interconnected rooms filled with his frescoes. One of these, the Stanza della Segnatura, houses the magnificent fresco The School of Athens. In it, Raphael depicted several of his contemporaries, immortalizing them through his art; the painting also contains various other hidden details. It is one of the works I examined most closely at the Vatican Museums, and it left such an impression on me that it deserves a dedicated post, which I will share at a later time.
The Sistine Chapel
After walking through so many rooms filled with frescoes, historical artifacts, and works by legendary artists, we were surprised to find that our guided tour had come to an end. We had paid 40 euros for a Spanish-language guided tour, booked through the official Vatican Museums website. Our guide pointed us toward the route to the Sistine Chapel, which was quite a distance from the last room we had visited, and we had to pass through several other rooms that didn't feature any frescoes (I’ll save those photos for a future post). I didn’t take many pictures along the way, either; we had been walking through the corridors of the Vatican Museums for two hours and were feeling a bit tired, but this final stop was a must. My wife had been just as eager to see the Sistine Chapel as I was to visit the Colosseum, and within our first two days in Rome, we both saw our dreams come true.
As you may know, taking photographs in the Sistine Chapel is strictly prohibited, it is the only place within the entire Vatican Museums where the rights are held exclusively by a single company. I have to confess, though, that I wasn’t the only one who dared to take photos there! 🤭 I was worried I’d get caught and be asked to delete them or leave, but I managed to pull it off. I actually took quite a few photos on the sly, though most turned out blurry. The ones I’m sharing here are the only good ones, but they turned out great, especially the shot of the ceiling, the one of the altar wall, and the final one, which shows the altar along with a portion of the ceiling. It’s a magical place in terms of art; however, any sense of spirituality I experienced came from within, as the presence of so many tourists makes the visit rather uncomfortable, especially since there’s no time limit on how long you can stay in the chapel.
The only "bad" photo is this selfie I took with my wife and my fellow adventurers. It turned out blurry, but it’s still worth it, after all, it’s a selfie in the Sistine Chapel! I have a few more images from our tour of the Vatican Museums that I hope to share with you later, but this was the absolute highlight of the entire guided visit, it took me five posts just to reach this point! 🤣 I’ll share a bit more soon about some of the interesting corridors and sculptures I came across, a place so vast that, even though we spent many hours there, I couldn’t even see it all. It was an intense amount of walking, but every second in the Vatican Museums was worth it... Thanks for reading and for your support, sending you a sincere hug! 🙏
