Today has been a very strange day and a little sad too. The mother of one of our colleagues died, and sincerely it feels as if the mother of the whole group had died, and not because we knew the lady, but because these are moments that make us see that we are practically family ... Gabriel was one of the first people I met since I arrived in Caracas and one of the singers I admire the most, and although there are days when we only greet each other when we arrive at rehearsal, he is a person I see every day, more than my own mother.
In the morning, just before we started singing we were informed of what had happened and we did the usual minute of silence in honor and respect for the deceased, but I am not really prepared for these issues even within the group. Last year the mother of a soprano also died, and after a while, when I was able to approach her to give her my condolences what we did was cry.... It hurts me to discover that I still feel hurt and that fear that everything can change in the blink of an eye. I have only been able to send a message to Gabo for the moment, I know I could not go to accompany him at this time, but we are still many brothers in the group, I know he will be fine with the others.
As I have told you in some of my last posts, we are currently preparing Brahms' Requiem, a funeral mass that has the peculiarity of being for the living and not for the dead, in fact many do not consider it a requiem as such, for not following the biblical text and for being in German and not in Latin. We rehearse the second movement, one of the most sublime, and we are being conducted by a French artist, Christophe Talmont. Before the Maestro went in, we had just collected some money among all of us to send it to the affected family, here in Venezuela we always have to help each other when someone dies, but we were all very sad. I believe that nobody told the Master from France what happened, but he felt an energy, a different sound today, but not a bad sound, today particularly everything came from the heart and we were more concentrated than ever.
I only hope that this transition will be as comfortable as possible for him. Like me, his deceased is not in the capital, he had to travel to the interior of the country and some singers managed to take them there in a transport of the institution. What has happened is very sad, so I wanted to share these pictures with him making music, what we love the most and reviewing so many years and concerts of smiles. Death is never easy, but I hope that in the same music that keeps us united I find the strength to be strong in this moment as hard as it is to lose a mother 馃檹
