The frogfish, sometimes called the Lusitanian toad (Halobatrachus didactylus), is the only species of the genus Halobatrachus, a pezmarin of the batracoidid family, distributed along the Atlantic coast of Africa and the western Mediterranean.
characteristics
The hairy toadfish is one of the strangest creatures because of its peculiar appearance. This species, which can be found in the warm waters of Indonesia, walks on the sea beds in search of food, hidden among sponges and corals. It resembles a toad in everything: the semicircular shape of its body, its thick mouth and its position in the sand when jumping on its prey. From its yellow body are born numerous branches that resemble hairs. Its size is very variable.
Habitat and distribution
The hairy toad fish, is native to the warm waters of Indonesia, is a very strange animal for its appearance, which has its habitat between corals and sponges, if you look at them it seems to be a coral and most of the time It also has the same color as corals. It has many branches that look like hairs, but almost always they are algae that facilitate the camouflage, and it gives the sensation of being all covered with hairs.
Feeding
The hairy toadfish lives in subtropical marine waters at shallow depth, between 10 m and 50 m. Although they are primarily marine, their presence has been described tracing the rivers of the Gambia.
They have sedentary life habits on soft sand or mud, often partially buried in the sand or hidden in cracks in rocks - deep water solitary -, where they feed on crustaceans, mollusks and small fish. The females deposit the eggs, which are sufficiently large, which are then kept by the males.
