Hi, Gems friends! I’m so happy to be back in this community after such a long time. Today I want to share my routine for defining my curls, and to be honest, today I had to do it under some pretty unusual circumstances: right in the middle of a power outage!
I’m still figuring out my curl type, but I’d say I’m somewhere between a 2B/2C and a 3A. My curls tend to be on the larger side, and even though my hair is pretty short, it’s thick and has a lot of volume.
Before I walk you through the step-by-step process, here are the products I used
I take a thin strand of hair and spray it generously with my spray bottle . The idea is to get it thoroughly damp.
I take a tiny bit of Xtreme gel in the palm of my hand and spread it evenly throughout the strand.
Right now I’m practicing the finger coil (or finger roll) technique, which involves taking a thin strand of hair, rolling it tightly with your fingers all the way to the root, and releasing it very carefully.
Paso 1
Since I have a huge amount of hair, parting it properly is a crucial step. What I did was draw a straight line down the center of my head and divide each side into three main sections. To keep from getting overwhelmed by all that volume, I used some bobby pins and ponytails to keep everything under control.
The key for me is to work with very small sections, starting at the nape of my neck. If I try to style large sections, the product doesn’t distribute evenly, my hair gets weighed down, and the curls don’t form nicely. So I take it step by step

I repeat this step strand by strand and then move on to the next layers of hair. One trick that has really helped me is not to scrunch my hair at this point or touch the curl too much as soon as I let it go I feel like if I manipulate it at that moment, I’ll completely ruin it, so I prefer to leave it intact and keep moving on to the rest.
Paso 2
For the top section, I followed exactly the same procedure: I worked my way down section by section, thoroughly dampening each one with the spray bottle and applying the gel. I tried to take thin strands about 1 cm wide to make sure each curl was well defined using the finger-coil technique.
That said, my arms were killing me by the time I was done! Even though I have short hair, since I have so much of it, doing this section by section is a full on shoulder workout. Finally, I got to the “pollina” section, gave it its final shape, and that was it.

Right now I don't have a hair dryer or a diffuser for curls, so I had to let it air dry completely. I'd really love to buy one in the future, because I feel like a diffuser would dry it much faster and give it incredible volume. Also, I have to admit that the cut I have right now doesn’t really flatter me in the back: my hair falls very flat, the curls lose their shape on top, and they’re only really noticeable at the ends. But anyway, I’m already planning to visit a specialized stylist soon to get a cut that suits my curl type and really brings out the definition.
And this was the final result! I know it's not a super complex routine or anything out of this world, but the truth is, it takes time, patience, and quite a bit of dedication especially if the power goes out halfway through the process.
I truly hope you enjoyed following along with me through this step by step guide. If you also have curly or wavy hair, leave a comment telling me what your favorite routine is or what tips you recommend so I can try them out next time.
