[Movie] Sing Street

John Carney is an Irish filmmaker who has already clearly established his style and what he does best. I don't think he intends to stray from the path his films take. It's better that he doesn't, because he once attempted a genre change when he directed the horror film The Rafters, but it wasn't very successful and is even difficult to find. Love and music are part of the combination that the filmmaker infuses into his productions, and so far it has yielded excellent results. That's where he shines.

The film he highlighted was Once, an excellent film that received nominations for important awards. Most of the nominations were for its music, but the story was also very good; I was quite surprised when I saw it. Most of his films are made in his home country, but success took him to Hollywood where he made Begin Again, another film with love and music, with a story that also captivated me.

Some may know him better as the creator of the series Modern Love, which was very successful, but I haven't been able to watch any episodes. It's something I have on my list, but I don't know when I'll have the time or the desire to do so. I also have Flora and Son on my list to watch.

This time, my recommendation is a film that's perfect for enjoying. Here, the filmmaker maintains his style, now approaching it from a more youthful perspective, by setting it in a high school with teenage characters. But don't worry, it retains the charm of his other films.

It's full of good characters, where even the character who might seem unlikeable will have their moments of redemption and renewal. It's one of those movies you can enjoy even with the family, and if you like British humor—in this case, Irish—you'll have a good time. The teenagers here aren't as dim-witted as in typical Hollywood comedies. It's not a film that boasts a highly original story, but the filmmaker knows what works and how to captivate the audience.

What more could you ask for? If you're not in the mood for anything intense, with complex or profound themes, this movie might be ideal, the one that will give you a very pleasant time. Not only for its story, but also for the songs we'll hear from these nerdy teenagers who decide to form a band, and it all starts with a girl.

The driving force of the world. What are men capable of doing for a woman? Doing. Even though women today might hate us, when men fall in love, we're capable of doing anything to win over the woman who drives us crazy. That's why Conor, the protagonist of the story, in his prime with his hormones raging, went crazy for Raphina, and that will change him.

Although the film is pure entertainment, it doesn't shy away from setting the scene and reflecting a certain era: a severe economic crisis, unemployment, and poverty. The film is set in the 1980s, when many Irish people, due to the crisis they were experiencing, moved to London, many without money, without knowing anyone, in search of better opportunities they wouldn't have in their homeland.

This year a new film by the filmmaker will be released: A Powerful Ballad. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm planning to watch it. I think it's available on Apple TV. I have to find it in my country to watch it, but for now, I invite you to enjoy Sing Street and tell me your opinion in the comments.

Es mejor así, porque ya intentó un cambio de género con la película de terror The Rafters, pero no tuvo mucho éxito e incluso es difícil de encontrar. El amor y la música forman parte de la combinación que el cineasta imprime a sus producciones, y hasta ahora ha dado excelentes resultados. Ahí es donde brilla.

Esta vez, mi recomendación es una película perfecta para disfrutar. Aquí, el director mantiene su estilo, abordándolo desde una perspectiva más juvenil, ambientándola en un instituto con personajes adolescentes. Pero no se preocupen, conserva el encanto de sus otras películas.

Está llena de buenos personajes, donde incluso el que podría parecer antipático tendrá sus momentos de redención y renovación. Es una de esas películas que se pueden disfrutar incluso en familia, y si les gusta el humor británico —en este caso, irlandés—, lo pasarán bien. Los adolescentes aquí no son tan ingenuos como en las típicas comedias de Hollywood. No es una película que presuma de una historia muy original, pero el director sabe lo que funciona y cómo cautivar al público.

¿Qué más se puede pedir? Si no te apetece algo intenso, con temas complejos o profundos, esta película podría ser ideal, la que te hará pasar un rato muy agradable. No solo por su historia, sino también por las canciones que escucharemos de estos adolescentes nerds que deciden formar una banda, y todo empieza con una chica.

La fuerza motriz del mundo. ¿De qué son capaces los hombres por una mujer? De hacer. Aunque las mujeres de hoy nos odien, cuando los hombres se enamoran, son capaces de cualquier cosa para conquistar a la mujer que los vuelve locos. Por eso Conor, el protagonista de la historia, en la flor de la vida con las hormonas a flor de piel, se vuelve loco por Raphina, y eso lo cambiará.

Aunque la película es puro entretenimiento, no rehúye ambientar y reflejar una época concreta: una grave crisis económica, desempleo y pobreza. La película está ambientada en los años 80, cuando muchos irlandeses, debido a la crisis que atravesaban, emigraron a Londres, muchos sin dinero, sin conocer a nadie, en busca de mejores oportunidades que no habrían encontrado en su país.

Este año se estrenará una nueva película del director: Una poderosa balada. Todavía no la he visto, pero pienso verla. Creo que está disponible en Apple TV.
