Anime isn't just about a good story with decent animation; behind this world lie facts and curiosities that many people may not even know exist. Today, I decided to do some research and share some of these fascinating yet often overlooked details. So, if you're interested in learning more about anime, today might be your lucky day.

There are several interesting and probably unknown facts about Pokémon. For example, Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, these fighting-type Pokémon from the first generation, are named after two martial artists. But wait, we're talking about their alternate names, Ebiwalar and Sawamular. The first was named after the Japanese world boxing champion Hiroyuki Ebihara, and the second originated from the world's first kickboxer, Tadashi Sawamura. Other super curious examples are Koffing and Weezing. As you know, they are toxic or poisonous Pokémon; the truth is that they were originally going to be named New York and Los Angeles in honor of those cities because of their pollution. This last bit seemed incredibly surreal to me, but apparently it's true. Oh, and to wrap up with this anime, the origin of the word "Pokémon" isn't Japanese, it's English. "Pocket" means pocket and "monster" means monster.

At the time, Slam Dunk was popular due to basketball's popularity in the 90s with Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls; in fact, the uniform is very similar to the NBA team's. Often, anime capitalizes on real-life events to give a stronger push. But the anime that follows has a completely opposite origin. Volleyball is a sport I personally enjoy; I played it as a teenager, but in Japan, it was rapidly declining in popularity. There was virtually no interest from people, schools, or universities until Haikyuu!! came along. According to its creator, Haruichi Furudate, he created the anime to encourage people to play the sport, as he considered it fun and visually stunning. And the thing is, he succeeded; the anime's release was a massive hit. And if we add to that the fact that the anime is really cool and incredibly realistic, it makes it even easier to see why.

Studio Ghibli couldn't be left out of this. In Japan, for many years, E.T. was the highest-grossing film until Princess Mononoke came along and dethroned it. From then on, in 1997, the game changed because anime in film took a massive turn, which led to Spirited Away winning an Oscar a few years later, in 2003. But you probably already knew that. What you probably didn't know is that Sophie, from Howl's Moving Castle, has magical powers in the novel; in fact, she defeats the Witch of the Waste—something very different from what we see in the film.

To wrap things up, I have a few other details, such as the fact that Katsuki Bakugo from My Hero Academia was originally going to be a kind and gentle character. Can you imagine such a character—because he's one of the best in anime—being the complete opposite of what he actually is? It would be totally absurd. Thank goodness they didn't do it. It's also known that Naruto wasn't going to be a fox, but a chef, and instead of becoming a fox, he was going to be a culinary student. These things blow your mind because you imagine how everything would have been, and it would be insane. Does Ichiraku ring a bell? Well, yes, that restaurant exists in real life. Hence the connection I mentioned earlier: Naruto loves ramen. There are countless more details, but this would go on forever. Imagine, I read that Goku was originally going to be a woman. Things that happen in the creative process.
