Hello, anime fans. We’re back with yet another list of five anime titles I’ve personally selected that represent the romance genre very well. Or at least, that’s what these animated works—aired during this past summer season—aim to achieve. Just like with other genres such as fantasy or action, romance is one of the most saturated genres in this industry, which makes it very difficult to find a good series to watch among so many generic anime that air every season.

That’s why I’m bringing you this TOP list of five anime I’ve personally selected so you can choose which one to watch. Just a reminder that everything you’ll read below is solely my own opinion. Also keep in mind that all the anime are rated on a scale of 1 to 10. We’ll start with the lowest-rated anime and end with the highest-rated one. If you’re a fan of romance and are looking for something special to watch this weekend, then I recommend sticking around to watch this list all the way through—you might just find your favorite RomCom.

Rich Girl Caretaker: I'm Secretly the Caregiver of the Most Popular Girl in This Rich Kid School

18634.jpg

Let’s start off on a somewhat generic note with the following typical summer-season RomCom anime that only caught my attention because of its first episode and its character designs—and that’s about it. Or at least that’s what personally interested me at the time, but after watching six more episodes, it ended up disappointing me quite a bit. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Yusaku Sakaishi, this anime was produced by the studio Brain’s Base. The anime tells the story of Itsuki Tomonari, a high school student who ends up working as a caretaker for an upper-class girl.

I don’t have much to say about this anime, since its ridiculously long title alone is enough (though the original title is much longer). Rich Girl Caretaker is nothing more than the typical, generic RomCom anime of the season, with the only slight twist being how the plot begins. Other than that, both the protagonist and the rest of the characters are as predictable and generic as they come. The same goes for the series’ abundance of tropes, such as the typical harem of girls surrounding the protagonist, the typical couple that never seems to move forward, and so on. The animation, on the other hand, manages to maintain its quality in terms of character design and color palette—and not much else.

Personally, I’d give it a 6.5/10 as far as the romance and comedy genre is concerned.

The Ogre's Bride

18634.jpg

We’re continuing with another romance anime, but this time with the slight difference that it features drama instead of comedy. That alone puts it a step above the previous anime, but what really made me want to watch the whole series is the way it starts. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Kureha and illustrated by Yū Shiroya, this anime was produced by the studio Colored Pencil Animation Japan. The anime tells the story of Yuzu Shinonome, a high school girl who is mistreated at home by her family and meets an ogre.

It’s an elitist, modern world, yet it features characters from classic Japanese folklore who mimic humans and manage to take over the upper class thanks to their power and status. The young protagonist has been belittled since she was very young by her own self-serving and selfish parents and has endured a terrible adolescence due to the whims of her spoiled and pampered younger sister. And as if that weren’t enough, an ogre—who appears as a powerful, millionaire young man—falls in love with the protagonist, and they begin dating by the end of the first episode.

We get to see all this and more in this anime, which—despite its poor animation from start to finish—manages to make up for it with a premise that really hooks you. However, the problem with this plot, packed with drama and romance, is the way events unfold in a generic and predictable manner. Most of the characters barely fulfill their respective roles and don’t undergo much character development. Only the protagonist seems to undergo any real development, though this is based on numerous clichés and some rather detestable characters, such as her parents.

The problem I have with this anime is that I can’t rate it very highly because of its many clichés and generic characters. It’s true that its plot, despite being predictable, kept me hooked from start to finish. Yes, it also has episodes and moments that are exasperating, but that’s because some of the characters are so detestable. I don’t know if this is a good thing or not, but what I do know is that this series has terrible animation, sacrificing fluidity and other aspects in favor of practical visual details and low-budget animation. The same goes for its sound effects and soundtrack.

Personally, I give it a rating of 7.5/10 in the romance, drama, and fantasy genres.

Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life

18634.jpg

Let’s move on to another great anime of the season—a little surprise from this past season, which was already packed with so many gems of modern animation. This time, we’re looking at an interesting blend of Isekai and generic RomCom, something I haven’t seen on TV in a long time. An anime that could turn out to be much more than it appears at first glance. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Hekiru Hikawa, this animated adaptation was produced by Linden Films. The anime tells the story of Ryūsei Narukami and Meteor Hanaori, who are reincarnated from a fantasy world.

At first, I thought it would be a simple romance-comedy anime with lots of references to fantasy, science fiction, and pop culture. But after the first episode, that changes completely once you meet the rest of the characters. That said, it’s interesting that this anime blends fantasy with humor and romance. Most notably, it features reincarnated souls, teleporters, heroes, demon kings, and magical girls. But instead of seeing them in a typical medieval world, they’re actually in a modern world trying to live ordinary lives.

The main premise of this anime is seeing how our main characters—who were once a Demon King and a Heroine fighting each other in their own world—have now been reincarnated into a modern world as a teacher and a student. So, while the subplot shows us stories of other people—and even monsters from other worlds—who are trying to take over this new world, the main plot is packed with all the typical clichés of any RomCom anime. I’m referring especially to the way most episodes focus on delivering nothing but comedy and romance scenes.

Another aspect of this anime is its humor, typical of any RomCom aimed at teenagers (Shōnen), complete with the usual references, romantic jokes, double entendres, and so on. As for the animation, I’ll just say that it features some Fanservice, not to mention that the character designs are also quite eye-catching. The art style, the light and soft color palette, the visual effects, and so on are also eye-catching. The fluidity and quality are solid, though they don’t stand out quite as much as in other anime of this genre. The sound effects and soundtrack also stand out in their own way.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the romance, comedy, and fantasy genres.

Kaiju Girl Caramelise

18634.jpg

We’ve reached the home stretch with the second romance-comedy anime that entertained me the most this entire summer season. I’m not saying this because it has the best love story I’ve seen in this industry, but because of its intriguing blend of romance, comedy, and science fiction (specifically, the Kaiju subgenre). Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Spica Aoki, this anime adaptation was also produced by Linden Films. The anime tells the story of Kuroe Akaishi, a high school student who struggles to control her emotions.

Rather than being unable to control her emotions, her real problem is controlling her body so she doesn’t turn into a giant Kaiju. However, this doesn’t happen until the moment Kuroe suddenly falls in love with Arata Minami, the most popular boy at her school. You have no idea how much I was fascinated by seeing a premise like this in such a generic RomCom anime. That small twist regarding the protagonist—her ability to transform part or all of her body into a giant monster that shoots beams from its mouth and bears a striking resemblance to Godzilla—is one of the best parts.

I’m not just saying this because I’m a huge fan of science fiction and Kaiju, but rather because of the way all of this fits into and intertwines with a typical teenage love story, featuring generic characters and tropes that are also typical of this genre. For example, the fact that the protagonist is the “outcast girl” who falls for the popular guy, and so on. Yes, it’s true that there are a few supporting characters who stand out a bit, but they’re only there to add a touch of humor to the series. Otherwise, the anime does its job, and the animation isn’t too bad either.

It’s true that it falls short in its use of CGI for the Kaijus, but it makes up for it with good character designs, especially that of the protagonist. It also plays very well with the animation, visual effects, the bright and varied color palette, the use of light and shadow, and so on. When the anime aims to capture the audience’s attention—whether through comedy or romance—the animation delivers. The sound effects are also decent, although some elements end up sounding a bit off to the average listener. The soundtrack also does its job well, featuring moments packed with action, romance, and plenty of humor.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the romance, comedy, and science fiction genres.

You and I Are Polar Opposites (Season 2)

18634.jpg

To wrap things up in the best possible way, I couldn’t think of anything better than the return of one of the best RomCom anime I’ve seen this year. The popularity this series enjoyed earlier this year was surprising, and knowing it would return soon with a second season got people even more excited. And now, after watching the entire series as it aired, I can confirm what I said at the beginning. Based on the web manga series written and illustrated by Kōcha Agasawa, this anime adaptation was produced by Lapin Track. In this new season, the young couples return with even more romance and humor.

If we compare this second season to the first, I’d personally say it successfully maintains the same pace it had from the very beginning. Let’s remember that we’re talking about a teen romance-comedy anime—it’s not the kind of show that requires a lot of shocking moments or plot twists that complicate everything. The one thing I really like about this anime is that it manages to stand out from other rom-coms because it avoids the typical clichés we’re all familiar with. Its characters aren’t as generic as most people would expect, either.

18634.jpg

Here's the trailer for the second season:

18634.jpg

What’s more, this anime manages to develop certain supporting characters and give them a prominent role. This is especially true in this second season, where we see that, to some extent, two additional couples manage to take center stage very easily. The pure, innocent, simple, and yet entertaining way it shows us every stage these young people go through in their final years of high school is one of the best aspects of the series. Something else that really fascinated me this season was that stage in young people’s lives when they have to decide what major to choose or what to do with their future. In short, it’s an anime that not only makes you laugh but also gives you food for thought.

On the other hand, in terms of audiovisual quality, this second season maintains the same level of quality and fluidity we saw in the previous season. That was the main reason the anime managed to capture our attention from the very beginning. Its warm and cheerful tone, the distinctive character designs, the color palette, the lighting, shadows, and visual effects are also top-notch. Another thing it does very well is incorporate cartoonish art styles that complement its humor and funny moments perfectly. The sound effects and soundtrack are also excellent.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in the romance and comedy genre.
