Under cover of night, the witch met her shadowy counterpart from distant forests.
For centuries they had played this game, exchanging skulls until dawn to evade vengeance for evil deeds.
But one midnight, her companion did not arrive at their clearing. She waited, her fury and fear growing as the sky brightened.
At last she crept back to her village, fearing what she would find.
In her hut lay not his head carved from wood, but his mortal remains, his skull split in two.
His enemies had tracked him through the spell. Now, trapped in another's body at dawn, she realised that her temporary safety had come to an end.
Without her true face, no one would know how to deliver her from the vengeance she herself had forged for so long in the shadows.
Her sorcery had brought her to ruin.
