He had killed them, but they still haunted him like ghosts.

As he strolled through the gardens of the park, thinking he was enjoying the peace of nature, he would see them in the mist.

In the chilly autumn evenings, they would appear among the leaves swirling in the wind, spying on him.

Dressed in his overcoat, top hat and walking stick, he would walk in rapt attention, trying to ignore these spectral presences.

But his victims would not leave him. Guilt tormented him, haunted by the spectres of those whose lives he had mercilessly cut down. A fateful punishment: although he had killed them, they remained bound to this world thanks to the remorse that haunted him relentlessly.
