Hello to all book lovers, playwrights, and content creators in the Town Square community and across the entire Hive network!
As I continued to grow as a playwright, the time came to teach. I have always believed that the best way to solidify knowledge, develop it, and continue growing is by passing it on to others. That’s how the idea arose to lead a playwriting workshop for young people just starting out in the fascinating world of theater.
I began teaching my first workshop and, in doing so, realized the challenges that arise when you have to help others clarify their ideas. This experience allowed me to confirm a principle I’ve always believed in: knowledge is reinforced and expanded to the extent that we address and resolve others’ doubts.
The workshop took place on Saturday mornings and consisted of eight sessions. Initially, the group began working despite facing significant challenges; however, of the approximately 15 participants who started, only four continued consistently. Those who dropped out left behind unfinished ideas and projects for a variety of personal reasons.
The four remaining participants continued to make valuable contributions, but before long, they, too, had to leave. This experience left me feeling sad that we had not achieved the main goal: to train, at an early stage, a group of future playwrights. I found it regrettable that such rich material—born of collective dynamics and the exchange of ideas—was going to be lost to oblivion.
Although many said they felt very comfortable with the group dynamic, circumstances forced everyone to leave. It was then, alone at home, that I began to review the scraps and fragments that remained from that experience. That’s when I told myself, “I can finish this work.”
I took the best ideas and began writing the play, incorporating both the participants’ concerns and my own. The project addressed the topic of education, which, in my view, must first and foremost begin at home. School is where one acquires an academic education, but true education in human values begins at home.
That’s how the play I titled “La Familia Chichones” came to be. The plot revolves around a couple who were constantly in conflict and arguing in front of their son, who—despite his love of learning—was affected by the environment of that dysfunctional home. Writing it gave me the opportunity to reflect on an issue that is extremely concerning for today’s society.
“The Chichones Family” came to a successful conclusion. Although the original participants never knew that I had finally finished the play, this first experience as a playwriting teacher taught me invaluable lessons that I still carry with me to this day.
