I am back and I wanted to share this new scene I finished just now. I tried a slightly different process this time around. Usually, I draw straight into my drawing app but today I actually made a traditional pen sketch on a piece of paper first. You can see that raw initial idea in the image below
Once I was happy with the paper layout, I uploaded it to my PenUp drawing app to use strictly as a guide for the final colored piece, which you can see in this almost done drawing below
I must admit, the whole inspiration for this scene came from something I saw online. I was scrolling through my feed and came across a photo of someone just completely lounging out on a balcony or a rooftop deck. What absolutely grabbed my attention and made me want to draw it were those bold, black and white striped cushions on the lounge chair. I just knew those stripes would look so striking against a solid background, so I had to sit down and sketch it out right away.
It was really fun using the paper sketch as a foundation ad it allowed me to focus purely on playing with the colors and textures once I got into PenUp. For this piece, I wanted to capture that relaxed, contemplative moment where a man sitting back, deep in thoughts, surrounded by bold brick tones and a striking orange sky. Combining the two methods gave the composition a really interesting look and composition.
Using a physical drawing as a guide really helped me map out the perspective of the rooftop walls and that window on the side before I even touched the screen.
