Libraries always struggle with too little space for too much stuff. We are loathe to discard anything, even terrible popular fiction past its shelf life. While weeding the stacks is a necessary job, we prefer to be creative with our options and find better ways to use our shelving so we can keep as much as possible.
Yesterday, when the manager left an hour before closing, Ms. M. (the youth librarian) and Ms. A. (the other library staff member working with us) conspired to rearrange some of our collection space. They moved little-used holiday items to a tall shelf so we could spread out our juvenile fiction book collection into the space they had occupied. We also moved our activity kits and puzzles so more space could be devoted to picture books. There was also considerable brainstorming for our teen space, but nothing has been done there yet.
Today should be interesting. The manager has no idea. I wonder if she will even notice. It might be funny to wait and see how long it takes her to realize what we did.
