Having a successful intranet can make a huge difference when it comes to running a business. An intranet that is a useful and time-saving portal that users check in with many times a day can really help boost the efficiency and productivity of your business.

Intranet has been at the heart of businesses for many years, and like other technologies, has evolved almost beyond recognition in the modern workplace. In recent years, the intranet has been hailed as dead or dying, but this isn’t the case, it’s simply a different animal than it used to be.

An intranet supports knowledge management in at least three ways:
-Provides compression of time and space among the users
-Offers the flexibility to exchange information, and
-Supports information transfer and organizational networking independent of direct contact between servers

The intranet has seen something of a revolution since the concept of Web 2.0 was introduced and central to it is effective communication and engaging employees, as well as gaining value within the organization from employee-generated content.

Just as in ‘real world’ social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn, there will naturally be those employees who engage fully with the social aspects of the intranet and those who ‘lurk’. With this in mind,a community should be valued on use rather than participation. Community managers should be put in place to encourage use and posting and to ensure that the community is engaging with the social intranet in the way that you want them to.
