This celebration connects to Ēostre (or Ostara), the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, whose name was said by St. Bede the Venerable to be the etymological origin of the very word 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳. The archetype Ēostre prompts us to honor the return of the Sun, the changing of seasons, and the awakening fertility of the earth.
The cycle of death, renewal, and resurrection is reflected in the descent and return of Ishtar (or Inanna), the trials and restoration of Osiris, and the resurrection of Jesus, among many other sacred figures’ stories. These stories speak to the universal pattern that it is often darkest before the dawn, reminding us that it takes courage to shed the weight of our calcified egos before we may rise renewed.
