Make an Infinity dress
This dress must’ve graced a thousand weddings - it’s great for bridesmaids because it’s so versatile and can be manipulated and tied into dozens of different unique styles. That means that the bridesmaid will have a dress that they can wear to hundreds of post-wedding events thanks to the bride.
The dress is not only versatile it is also extremely body-flattering and can be worn with success by almost anyone. I’ve made thousands of these dresses and have never had a single complaint (promise); it’s a wonderful dress!
There are many ways to make it. One method is to attach the straps to a circle skirt, the other, to attach them to an a-line skirt. I’ve included both patterns for this tutorial, but I very much prefer the a-line skirt because it’s lighter to wear.
An infinity dress is also great for the prom, especially if the girl can’t decide what she’d like to wear and needs to be economical in her choice - this dress can be worn again and again and always made to look fresh and different, it’s really good for any special occasion.
Downloading and printing your pattern
Download the PDFs there are usually two or more, each PDF is titled.
You can print out the full pattern sheets if you have access to a printer, such a
a Canon large format printer. Set this printer to print out the actual size. Print only the pages in your required size.
You can print out the pattern on a home printer in A4(letter size) sections, and
stick them together.
Use Adobe Reader or Acrobat to format your print. This is free software from Adobe and can be used on any computer. Use “Print Set Up” to format. Set to “Poster”, tick “Tile”, tick “Add Cut Marks”. Set paper size to A4.
Your printer will print all necessary sections with cut marks on each numbered sheet so that you can easily stick sections together.
Requisites
4.5 m stretch Jersey fabric(2 way stretch is best such as Bon Bon)
Sewing machines for stretch fabric (Serger, cover seam, overlocker or plain machine with attachments and sewing knitted fabrics.
Scissors
Cotton for sewing
5cm wide knitted elastic
1.5 cm wide knitted elastic
Tape for making hanger loops
Ruler

Cutting your pattern
Lay the fabric on the fold and place your desired pattern pieces on the material. If you’re using the circle skirt, you might need to lay your fabric flat. Cut 2 skirt sections to the fold, 2 boobtube sections to the fold. Cut 2 straps 2.5 meters long in the width for the desired size:
Size 28 : 29cm wide
Size 30 : 30cm wide
Size 32 : 31 cm wide. Add 1cm to the width per size.
Measure the top of the skirt and cut a 12cm wide band to match the length.
Elastic
The rule that works here is to cut the elastic (the 5cm wide version) at 8cm less than the waist size.
Standard measurements
Size 28 : 50cm Add 5cm up per size
Sewing
Stitch skirt together at side seams using 6mm seam allowance. Preferably using an overlocker.
Overclock the sides and top of the straps. Hem the sides and top.
Neaten hem edge of skirt. Hem at 1.5cm
Fold waistband in half. Fold elastic in half. Set elastic onto band matching side seam, 1cm from bottom raw edge. Stitch together at the side seam.
Fold band to right side, folding elastic inside. Stretch and stitch elastic to the band.
Turn the skirt inside out. Mark centre front with a notch.
Lay the hemmed straps right sides together and cut an angled section off the base - 5cm to nothing (see video). That’s 5cm off the side, the center is the longer section.
Fold the 2 straps over each other (crossing over by 5-6cm see video).
Sew infinity straps to skirt wrong sides together(so that once you’ve added the waistband the straps will lie behind it)
Turn the ensemble to the right side. Pin the waistband to the skirt section, matching side seam, then quarter the waistband and match to the center front, center back and other side. Stitch waistband to skirt using 6mm seam allowance, easing to fit.
Press
Garment is ready to wear.
Sew the boobtube together at side seams. Neaten hem edge. Stitch 1.5cm elastic to the boobtube top edge. Hem
